Rocky soil?

Hi -

How does rocky soil affect vegetable gardening?

I have a yard that slopes towards a creek. At the farthest from the creek is a dark clay soil under very old oak trees. Towards the creek, the soil rapidly turns to a looser rocky soil. I'm planning a large vegetable garden in the rocky soil (best location for sun and relative to the house). I dug four 50'x4' beds and pulled two 5 gal buckets of larger rocks out per bed as I dug. The beds have lots of small pebbles in it.

Are the pebbles/rock good or a problem for the soil and plant roots? I've seen pictures of people making screens to filter out the rocks. On the other hand, I've seen crushed granite gravel for sale to improve clay soil here in central tx. Thanks.
