I don't mow, so I have to mulch---or plant---the entire yard. This is a small area in deep shade under a deck next to my garden level bedroom door. I like the looks of the pine needles once they settle down. Unfortunately, I have something coming to my yard every night lately digging up all my fresh mulches. I wake every morning to find seaweed, decayed wood chips and leaf mulch scattered into my recently neatly refreshed wood chip paths.

You all know you can build a huge compost pile in a single day, correct? I ask, because it was years before I figured that out. Ingredients do not have to be various to make a great compost mulch---other than alternating carbon to nitrogen, which, frankly, can be less fussy that I thought in my youth.

It may be that time of year where you live where bags of chipped leaves and grass clippings are left curbside. You can easily get three bags in your trunk and two in your back seat if you're persnickety---or four in your trunk and four inside the car if you're not. Don't forget, though, that Pumpkin season is coming right up, so if you're finding yourself short on greens, you can put those chipped leaves aside until smashed pumpkins start showing up on roadsides. Pumpkins are a smokin' hot addition to a pile.
