I really, really want this rose, but I generally have only seen it as a semi-supported monster shrub. Can it like other Noisettes be trained up into a) a smallish ornamental tree, or b) a large shade tree?
I just don't see this being the rose for growing a tree. It's more sprawler/scrambler than rambler in its form. Mine does put out some long canes off old canes but as big as mine are (4) of them, I don't see either of them being a tree climber. They are generally regarded as big plants with width and height, but not the same shape and form of rambling into a tree. There are so many roses out there that would but JMHO that I would not want this up a tree for the reason that it repeats so frequently and the beauty of the mass of blooms given its shape would be lost in a tree, and moreover, I don't think it would grow well in the drip line of a tree. I don't think that's in its DNA.
I planted a Crepuscule at the base of an Ash tree out near my driveway. I really wanted it to climb that tree but as Patricia described it is really more a sprawler/scrambler and it is sprawling all around that tree and a bush that is planted on the other side. But it is doing extremely well and when blooming puts on a stunning display. I am pretty content to give up my idea of it climbing that tree and let it do what it wants.
