less breakable material for cold frame panes

I put together a couple of cold frames topped with old windows last spring. They worked well for protecting early greens and eggplants from temperature swings, and I decided to try overwintering small lettuce plants in the frames, so i left the windows on through the winter. This spring four of the twelve panes I used are broken. I've picked out the broken glass and put plexiglass panes into those frames. I'd like to know what other gardeners do in areas of heavy snow. Is plexiglass apt to survive the winter? Do you just not try to keep the windows on through the snowy season? Is there a way of protecting glass panes? Are there plastic films that are sturdy and insulatory? Do plastic and plexiglas admit enough light to allow plants to thrive?
