The last fall and spring plants should be coming off the baby schedule. They really should be on their own by the end of the second year in the ground, and getting supplemental water only during very dry spells during the second year.

If you are talking about drip irrigation, there is loads of information on it on many of these forums. I use 1/2 inch hose that I have soaker tubes connected on at various intervals. You can do the same thing with individual drippers/emitters to each plant or containers. All the irrigation companies have their own versions. From my experience I highly recommend watering this way. You waste far less water, since the water is right down at the base of the plant, less evaporation. Another added bonus is that you don't wet the folliage of the plants. My soaker tubes are under by bark mulch so I lose even less water to evaportation. Before I moved I had dripper hoses run to 8 different flower baskets around my veranda. It worked wonderful, even when we went on holidays.
The key to good watering is to water deeply and less often so the plants establish a really good root system. Drip irrigation is excellent for deep watering since you can set them on timers and really soak the ground around each plant - but not all the ground between the plants which is just helping the weeds to grow.

Thank you that sounds exactly like what I need. Now that I know it is a great way to water, I'll start looking around at the different types available. It doesn't need to be fancy, just productive.
