log splitter problem

I have a used splitter that is developing pressure problems. sometimes it splits fine, the next piece it simply stops as soon as it meets resistance. Eventually,it will build up pressure to split it. When it is in motion the speed is consistant, the power is not. It has a 8hp gas engine,& 2 stage pump

Check the fluid level with the ram fully retracted. If low, air may have entered the system. Purge it after topping up by cycling the ram it's full length several times. Does it have a filter in the return line? It may need to be changed.

fluid level is fine and there is no filter. I replaced the controls last year, it has a 2 stage pump which is probably 20 yrs old.
