Yes, I sharpen shovels with a file if I have used them repeatedly for a year or two, or have done digging in soil with lots of roots, pebbles or rocks. I have never sharpened any of my corded shovels. That would violate the warranty.

I sharpen my shovel and all of my digging tools whenever they need it. Makes for much easier digging, though not much help when just using the shovel for leaning on.

I've done a lot of digging & don't recall ever sharpening a shovel. I've broken & replaced quite a few handles though.

I put a bit of an edge on them from time to time with a flat file, and it helps with penetration in root-rich soil and in clay. Taking the time to sharpen also gives me a chance to thoroughly clean the shovel, inspect the handle-head attachment, and see any problem areas that are coming up before they show up. Some of the nicer shovels (i.e. NOT what the big box stores sell) come pre-sharpened.
