Dual Staircase Remodel

Please help me with ideas for my staircase. I was going to do oil rubbed bronze balusters and keep the wood handrails the same color. I'm considering staining the wood darker now........What do you think I could do with this to really make it look nice? I'm replacing the carpet for sure.....Any ideas are appreciated. Should I paint the risers white? I am replacing the chandelier, marble entry (crema marfil), paint for sure also.

Awesome tips Cynthia. The chandelier you described reminds me of our Lawton Chandelier. And I agree, brass is back!

I would recommend changing up the wall hanging on the left side if you opt for a darker palette--wouldn't want anything to compete with that stunning staircase!

Since the side rooms floor is running side to side the foyer flooring should run from front to back. An inlaid wood pattern strip the same withe as the wall could handle the transition in direction nicely

Yes, exactly! that's what I was seeing in my head but didn't articulate. Definitely a change of direction will set off the foyer floor from the other rooms. Thanks for making the point.

Your house is so beautiful, it deserves a treatment on the railings and balusters such as the iron ones shown below.

great pictures from albert kincl design.....love the black accents....I would put down hardwood in the entry as well....and some leopard or zebra carpeting on the stairs...that is classic to me!

I agree with Doni, I think if you leave the railing the lighter wood and the railings dark, it will feel unbalanced. Right now everything BLENDS and you want a statement. There is a zebra carpet out there that is by masland that is a tone on tone zebra. That would be great without going overboard. I like tone on tone. I don't think you have to go too elaborate on the iron to get a good look. just a little interest. you have alot going on. I love the look to your mantle in the far room. You better have a wedding on that staircase!!! Good Luck! Gail from EP

I missed cynthias idea it sounds like a great solution. you could also change up the chandalier to a darker iron . I would go for a parquet floor or the change in direction of the wood also! great solution! GailEP

I would only change the coverings on the stairs to wood, I'd leave the marble as its the most elegant material to put in a front entrance. The large black chandlier sounds good.

My first suggestion would be a good floor transition. I would lay in a herringbone pattern same finish as existing wood.

If you want to do something traditional and special I would suggest a variation of the Chinese Chippendale look for your stairwell. Generally, they are set on the diagonal, but I like this one very much.

I would use a large format, charcoal colored tile on point on the floor-not too dark, mid value in color. Paint the wall a soft gray to balance against all the warm wood tones. The railing and balustrades become a dark metal and I would use a light fixture in the same metal finish as the railing. The carpet would be a very tight loop with no patterning to it in and ivory color such as Shaw's Look Twice (5J230) in the color Light Soda. One last thought, I would recolor the fireplace surround in a gray that is similar to the floor to draw guests in to that incredible space in the background. The dark railing and light carpet will certainly catch the eye upon entering and then after the guest has taken that all in, they will be drawn through the opening. Also, the artwork in the entry should possibly be somewhat modern using some fun colors, but nothing so extreme that it takes away from the focus of the staircase.

Your stair treads are more than likely solid red oak under the carpet. Remove carpet or replace it as a runner down the center. Sanding sealer on skirt boards and risers then paint white. Replace all of the balusters (spindles) with iron without having to change the railing at all. Here are a few similar designs so you could get an idea what it might look like. Also, if I could be of any assistance please contact me.
