Cheap Pots

I am looking for cheap pots. I found 1000 light bulbs but do not know which size is best or if there is a cheaper place. Someone posted in another thread about using 16" pots. However, do you is that height or width? Which is more important for roses? Thanks.

The cheapest pots that you can get are those that have been recycled. Many nurseries, particularly those that cater to the landscaping trade, have recycling programs where they take pots back for $.25 and resell them for around $.50 each for the 5 gal size, with respectively more or less for the bigger or smaller sizes.

The size of the pot you need is related to the kind of rose that you get. Most climbers would require at least 25 gallon sizes, most standard size hybrid teas would prefer that size, but will get along on 15 gallons just fine also, and mini's etc are fine in 5 gallon size pots. It's not the girth or the depth of the pot that matters, but rather the volume, and the availability of sufficient moisture. In other words, you can successfully grow a big rose in a small pot, but you had better be out there giving it water every 15 minutes. So the size of the pot you need is also related to how often you are willing to water and how hot/dry/windy your climate is, all of which tend to increase the plant's need for water. The roses would like damp, but not soaking/flooded soil, and you have to have enough soil in the pot to be able to keep it that way, given your willingness to water.

Roses in pots ALWAYS take more care than roses planted in the ground.

The black nursery pots are probably the cheapest. Most nurseries carry a variety of sizes and the bigger the more expensive of course. The largest size pot here at my nursery is about 3.99 and is big enough for a full size rose.

If you want something more decorative they get more pricey. Walmarts usually has some that aren't too bad but they'll be at least $10.00 a piece and up. There's also Big Lots and Costco that have some reasonable prices.

Thanks so much for answering. I don't care about decorative just function. WE do not have nurseries here and wal marts is too much for all of the pots I need. I found the 15 gallon size at 1000 bulbs but the 25 gallon is a fabric pot. Will that work?

I've never heard of growing roses in a "fabric" pot. I did find the website you mentioned, and looked at the product, and it looks flimsy to me. I'd stick to plastic.

The Lowes stores all seem to have a big rack of recycle pots. You might have to ask where it's located. I take small pots there and exit with large ones, but of course it depends on what people have brought in recently.

I ordered large nursery pots from Mortons in TN. It's nice to have good new containers to pot up roses & they are quite reasonable, even with shipping included.

I've had great experience with Greenhouse Megastore. Orders placed for pots are received in about 5 business days for me here in NJ.

You guys are awesome. I just placed an order with Morton's to try first. The Greenhouse Megastore will be next. My rose order is now up to 15. My new rose beds are not finished due to the crappy cold wet weather and so in pots they go until they have good root balls and the raised beds are completed.
