Winter killing

We had some freak freezing late this spring and I was wondering about the roses that have frost damage. I planted some bare root roses and during the freeze, I thought i had enough protection on them. When I bought them I made sure that they were grade 1's with good thick, health canes. After the freeze, I noticed that some of the canes had turned black with obvious freeze damage. My question is how do you deal with this. I have a lot new growth under the freeze damage on most of the roses. There are a few canes that are completely black down to right above the bud union with no growth. I was wondering, do i need to leave the canes on there or do I need to cut down to the health part of the cane. Again some of the canes are black down to just above the bud union.
