Need suggestions re: planting augers

I have no experience with using a drill operated auger but thought a Lowes type would maybe suit my needs? I have workable soil with the occasional small rock or root in a prepared bed. I would love to find something easier than my "grubbing hoe" for planting up to 1 gallon pots of perennials and annuals. I'm not much for planting bulbs but might use it some for that too. Saw one in a garden catalog for 31.00 but thought a retail store type might do just as well and be cheaper. Any thoughts and help will be appreciated!
