Nacogdoches/Grandma's Yellow. Bright, non fading, healthy. Probably my favorite yellow. Nacogdoches [Na-co-doh-chez] is the oldest town in Texas. I just bought a bright non fading yellow at Walmart, Sunny Delight, that is healthy, blooms lots. I also like Easy Going, Carefree Sunshine, adore Julia Child.

Terry, You did not mention fragrance, so I suggest you check out 'St. Patrick.'

I'll recommend Gold Medal. It has lovely gold colored blooms with very good form, and a very nice scent. It was a gift and I was surprised by how much I ended up liking it as I normally don't like the plain yellow roses.

Julia Child is a great rose, but to me it is more a golden yellow. I just bought Sunsprite, a bright lemon yellow floribunda with any amazing fragrance.

St Patrick is great. I actually got this rose by accident, it was supposed to be Vanilla Perfume. It tends to bloom in cycles. The blooms are long lasting and make great cut flowers. Here are some pics:

I saw Morning Has Broken at RU last month. I do not know much about the rose, but it was stunning in the greenhouse.

Oooh Buford those are lovely pictures. I'm sold!!!! Judy

St. Patrick is the one that I think has the most substance, competitive, long lasting. Ah, Buford has proof. It is the best yellow of the HTs.

St Patrick is not cold hardy...

I recommend Grandma's Yellow, Sunsprite, Carefree Sunshine, St Patrick, Easy Living, and Graham Thomas.

I guess if you're going to winter protect heavily, or grow them as annuals, then HT's and Floribunda's would be okay in your zone 3 climate.

St. Patrick is not hardy at all, even for an HT and any temp below freezing, will kill back this rose. It also has a tendency to balling in cooler climates.

You might want to look at Mellow Yellow as a non-fading yellow HT.

For Floribunda's, Arthur Bell is the hardiest yellow, but it fades quickly. Sunsprite, Chinatown and Mountbatten are others to consider and all three of these are fairly tough yellow roses.

Julia Child is nice too, but again, fades within a day to a light butter yellow/white colour.

Buford, I think the furry rose is my fave. /Abi

My two yellows are Graham Thomas and Oregold. I love Graham, it is beautiful. I have to say that Oregold is incredible! It is a nice, bright yellow that doesn't fade. It lasts a very long time on the bush as well as in a bouquet. Very disease resistant here where BS is very bad too. It also has a really nice tall vase shape. My mom has always had an Oregold and she grew out a cutting for me a few years ago that has turned into a wonderful plant. :o)

Buford, oh, I REALLY do LIKE that St Patrick's rose! ... maybe, I'd grow this one in a large container and store in the coldroom for winter. With a good amount of winter protection, I've successfully wintered many T's and floribunda, though I have recently moved and will now only plant a few select varieties and place these up against the south foundation of my home.

I think with yellow roses, it's not easy to find that "ideal" variety ... but, please keep the suggestions coming!

twrosz, it's worth a shot. I think you can keep the bush to 2.5 ft height easily. It doesn't throw up huge long canes. I didn't see your zone and never realized that St. Patrick is only hardy to zone 7.

aeiger, that's my Rusty. Everytime I put flowers on the table she likes to 'smell' them. She also likes to sit on my laptop when I'm online.

The only thing St. Patrick lacks is a great fragrance. It has a very mild rose scent.

I've had good luck with Carefree Sunshine-----It lives up to its name.

Griffith Buck's Golden Unicorn comes to mind and there may be some of the Brownell sub-Zeros. I grew Brownell's yellow climber, Elegance in Z5/6 Ohio and it was cane-hardy. A bit too stingy with bloom, tho so I can't recommend Elegance. Gold Medal wintered well for me in Ohio. Sorry you've gotten SO many replies from zone 8. Lot of pretty yellows mentioned here but yellows & apricots tend to be among the least winter-hardy. Whatever you choose, better get two!

Oh, well, if we're going to talk about roses other than HTs or Florries -- I have to speak for 'Jeri Jennings.'
It is disease-free here, and has the most beautiful arching habit.
Blooms shift color, so that you have everything from rich gold with a touch of red, to a sort of golden creme,
    all in one spray.

I played hooky today and went to the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham [divine!!!] On the way there.....I saw yellow roses growing in 2 different yards, but they looked similiar. Large, tall, very healthy with bright yellow blooms. I always remembered someone said that Sunbright was a very tall non fading yellow......wonder if this could have been that rose? It was available alot in years past in my area. Can anyone take a guess? If it is Sunbright, its one I would like to have. There is another rose growing in front of a little house near me, it is the most enormous rose I have ever seen, it is like a huge tree. They whack it back, it comes back just as big, blooms all the time, no disease. I stopped and asked once - they didnt know......just got it at some store. It looked similiar to these other two. I might just try to find a Sunbright and find out. Has anyone had any experience with this rose?

What about Welcome Home? I never hear about that rose...

I live in your zone! I can finally advise someone!! Who knew!

Well, I winter protect quite heavily and I can only get zone 5 and under to survive outside. In a pot that's in an unheated garage, etc - sure you can. I loved St. Patricks - so prolific - wonderful rose - it lived for one winter outside (barely) and got maybe one bloom the next year, then it died.

Ones I have overwintered outside (with graft buried and lots of protection) are:

    1. Golden Celebration - LOVE this rose - gets about 3 1/2 feet in the garden!!!

    2. Julia Child - overwinters well and grows to about 2 feet.

    3. Molineux - doesn't do well - has made it through one winter so far, but only got to about 1 foot.

    4. Graham Thomas - love this rose - does very well!

That's all the yellow ones I've grown in the garden. Of these I would recommend Golden Celebration (it's my favorite rose) as the best. However, grown in a pot, you might REALLY like St. Patrick. I would try it again in a pot if I could find it.

Well I bought Anothoney Meilland not sure that is spelled correctly but really like the yellow blooms but found out he does not hold them long as they drop quickly. I hate to dig them out as I have two that seemed to repeat bloom very nice but the flower does not hold up long. They are a nice size flower and very dark green leaf but not sure I am sold on him..Will see again this year. His yellow color is non fading and nice flowers that is a plus!!

Although the initial flush of Easy Going has some orange hues, as the season progresses the blooms become more yellow. The centers of the blooms are not high, but I must say after growing several yellows, it has been my best. Good Luck! CJ

I vote for St. Patrick, and even though yellows are not my favorite color in the garden, unless it is a warm yellow, I would snatch it up in a minute if it was hardier.

Carol, thanks for the suggestions from another winter weary zone 3 Canadian gardener. My sister had grown 'Golden Celebration' and it had performed very well coming through winter with a good amount of live wood, though yes, it had been mounded up ... I think I'll plant this one in memory of Janet, she was only 39 when cancer had taken my gardening pal away from us. 'Julia Child', I know I must get this one! I had grown 'Molineux', though it just didn't have the traits I was looking for, I guess we can't all love the same roses!

Oregold / Miss Harp, is one I had first grown way back in my late teens, I still can't get this rose out of my head! I loved the form, spicy fragrance and healthy foliage, though the blooms did blow quickly, something seemingly common with yellows. It does rather remind me of 'Anthony Meilland' posted by jess2132000 ... great photos!

I'm going to note all these suggestions, and hopefully soon see a few available at the nurseries, ... ah, it's getting to be that time of the year, finally!

I don't know where to find it anymore, but Sunbright is an excellent yellow HT that is not anywhere near as tender as St Patrick. If it were only even more hardy. I lose it to winter every few years.

It is not perfect, but Julia child is The best yellow floribunda that I have seen for the North. Most don't even survive here.

The Buck rose, Prairie Harvest is a very good yellow with HT looks and quite hardy too.

Two climbers that certainly don't climb here because they die back every winter but do make nice tall bushes or short pillars are Golden Arctic and Roberta Bodner.

Good luck and let us know what survives for you.

    Regards,

    Charles

I noticed that someone commented that St. Patrick is only hardy to z7, but, I saw somewhere that it was hardy to z5. Can someone clarify whether or not this rose would be ok in z6? Also, does anyone have any opinion that they can give in regard to Midas Touch when compared to St. Patrick? I'm debating between the two, and I know that Midas Touch is available locally, and St. Patrick is not. In all honesty, I'd really like a Gold Strike, but I think that this is only a florists rose. Please advise...

St. Patrick is borderline hardy here, and I'm on the border of zones 6 & 7. I know of people who grow it successfully here and I know of others who can't and others who had it for several years before it went belly up. Definitely a case of needing a warmer microclimate and winter protection.

St patrick has no smell I read somewhere. That ruins it for me even though I love your pics Buford. You almost had me sold.

I am in a much warmer place but yellows are my favorite so I have a lot of them. Julia Child really is wonderful. Golden Celebration is great too. Radiant Perfume might work for you with some protection...hardy to 6b according to hmf so protection is in order.

You could try - but I really doubt if you can overwinter a rose here unless it's rated to zone 5 or less. Although, really protected AND against the side of the house might do it???

sunni, I can detect a slight fragrance, but that's it. It's a bit disappointing. Especially since I have it out front by the street and people always stop and try to smell it. I've thought about moving it and putting a really fragrant rose there to wow everyone.

Charles, I agree sunbright is a great yellow rose. I really love mine. And I am a yellow rose lover.
I saw some sunbright container roses at my local Lowe's this week.

Carol ... I'm gonna try and post a photo of the rose bed I had back when I was on the farm ... lots of T's and floribundas in cold zone 3 ... these had been heavily protected and had came through with good results.

    Terry

Terry - love to see the photo!

I do have lots of HTs and Floribundas - about 50 (growing larger every year LOL). I just (through experience) try to plant only zone 5 or lower YMMV. Cheers,

I would offer these up for consideration. Have a look at Sunblest/Landora, Lemon Spice, and Tivoli Gardens. Sunblest has done well for me in the past as a good garden rose. Lemon Spice has a pale yellow color, but it has a strong fragrance. Tivoli Gardens has large flowers and is healthier than most of the others.

I don't know if it would work in your zone as mine is 9, but just planted Radiant Perfume, which is a gorgeous yellow and has an incredible fragrance.

Sunblest was my very best yellow rose for several years, then the cane borers got it! I have not been able to find another one locally. The Japanese beetles loved it too.

Besides St. Patrick, Welcome Home and Santa Fe are good yellow HT's. I love my Gold Medal (grandiflora), also.

Sunsprite is an all-around great rose for the yard and its color is a true-yellow hue, unlike many other so-called "yellow" roses that are actually more golden orange-tinted. Some might say it is just a little bit whitish, but I don't think there is any citron yellow colored rose that is not a little light; Sunsprite is the deepest I'm aware of.

Sunsprite shatters in a day. Nothing like waiting and waiting for a rose to bloom for it to be gone in a day. Julia is so fantastic. I just don't know why anyone would have any other if they only have room for one.

Good to know about Sunsprite's bloom longevity, cjrosaphile. I sort of regret not buying it this year because my eye was only on Julia. I also chose Lightkonigin Lucia instead which has a similar colour as Sunsprite. Beside Julia, I have to say Golden Celebration and Teasing Georgia as it does well in my climate. I really wish I could say the same about Graham Thomas. I love this rose bloom but it is not profuse in blooms or vigorous.

I can understand why your eye was only on Julia, jjpeace. Just got Golden Celebration and it is like a climber, lots of bs and moderately fragrant unless it improves with age. It's on the fence for me unless you can tell me its worth keeping.
