I was given one of those "nice" old Gravelys' by a customer. A friend of mine just dotes on them, so he got it as a gift. Too old, cranky, heavy, prone to knock ya down and run ya over, and its gone!! Woo-haw!

I got mine new back in 1984. I had a rough place to take care of and I needed something that could take a licking and keep on ticking. I've mowed with it, bush hogged with it, plowed with it, tilled with it, and hauled many a cord of wood out of the woods. So for 27 years the 5240 and me have been mates. Its done all I've asked it to do, and is still going strong. It's heavy for a fact, but up to now its never knocked me down, or run over me. Maybe I'm just lucky.

My 87 yr old father was out using his Gravelly with a sickle bar hooked to it. Daddy suffered from congestive heart failure , was 6' tall and weighed about 120 pounds. He fell and banged his head on the stone wall. It caused a subdural hematoma. Three days later, he passed on after slipping into a morphine induced coma. He was too weak to survive what would have been an iffy operation at best. I dont blame the Gravelly, he wasn't getting enough oxygen to his brain and it made him stubborner than usual.

I'm sorry for your loss. I think it's great though that at his age he still wanted to get out mow with his Gravely.

I will be 73 in June and I weigh about 205 lbs, and I work out twice a week to keep my strength up so I can still handle the beast well enough. But your dad at 120 lbs wasn't really up to that, but as you say, I doubt you could have told him.
