If it runs with choke, but then dies, you are having fuel starvation. You need to remove the fuel pick-up from the tank and either replace or soak it in carb cleaner.

The old beast hasn't had all that much use, really since it was new. I think that I'll try ggoyeneche's suggestion, to see if the pickup is clogged. It's not a great unit, but its handy to use instead of taking my Stihl with me.

Sounds like the diaphragms have gone bad in the carb.
They either go stiff or wrinkled with age... either way they will no longer suck the fuel out of the tank.

Servicing HOMELITE for over 50 years

My neighbor gave me a homelite weedwacker it starts easy, but I do not know how to change the cord. I tried to unscrew the bottom, but no success. Can I buy a manual for this think. I also need to know the correct fuel mixture.

If the 'bump' knob is black, it unscrews to the left (CCW)...If RED it unscrews to the right.
I have most any part for HOMELITE trimmers etc...
For the ration of the fuel mix 32:1 or 50:1 can be used, being very careful to be exact when measuring.

You might want to check the vent is the fuel cap, they are prone to plugging.

Funny thing about Diaphrams............they dont last very long if you dont use the equipment it seems.
They dry out and the symptoms are always similar to those you stated in my experience.( which is i'm sure far less than Bill W's )
Sometimes you can soak a diaphram and get it to work long enough for your immediate needs..............and then sometimes fogetaboutit ;o)

I have an old Homelite Model HK-24 Trimmer/Brushcutter. I am looking for someplace to buy parts. It has a Kawasaki TD24-DX engine. The clutch between the drive shaft and the engine came apart. I need to find a replacement. Can any one help me.

Ditto the vent in the cap. A stone material that is prone to clogging.
It will run fine for a while then a vaccume builds up & starves the engine.

The fuel cap problem is likely NOT with the outer plug, but with the rubber 'duck-bill' valve that will turn to mush in time.
7 to 10 years is about their life...I change them frequently.

I have a Homelite weedwacker, ZR series, model Z825sd. Is the fuel mixture 32:1. I misplaced my manual and it's either 16:1 or 32:1.
Anyone know?

I have a Homelite HLT-16 Classic with the 30 CC engine. I prime the fuel bulb 3 or 4 times, and try to start it and nothing happens, not even an attempt to turn over. I pulled the plug out it was wet around the threads but totally dry on the plug tip. I thought I flooded it although it doesn't seem to be getting any gas at all. Funny thing is, I used it about 3 days previous and it started and ran fine. Rough estimate on age is 30 to 35 years. I spent 45.00 last year getting it tuned up. Is it really worth the effort or expense to fool with it?

i have a ut20704 it will start right up but as soon as you give it gas it bogs out it will run as long as you dont give it gas

I inherited a homelite HLT-15 classic weedwacker. Won't start !!!!
I have spark, 60lbs compression, getting fuel. I prime it, choke on, pull twice then open choke. Top of piston is wet. It has a champion DJ7Y plug. What is the fuel/oil ratio. I'm going to drain fuel and try fresh fuel.
Any other suggestions?
