anything to seal possible leaking ring

my briggs 5hp engine. when i actualy get it started smokes excessively, a lot of times i have to hold the choke open to keep it running. so i decided to take the top head piece off and notice when the cylinder moves up and down (manually) theres oil smeared on parts of the walls. I know engines burn oil naturally when it lubes the walls, but is this too much, a possible leaking ring? if it is, is there anything, any treatment possible for a small engine that could seal the ring, besides overhauling it. just wondering. thanks
