Lawn mower string won't retract

We have a Cub Cadet lawn mower which is a pull start, but the string won't retract. Are there good sites out there to help me with a DIY repair, or is this something so complex I should just take it to a shop?

I'm not having much luck searching for repair sites for lawn mowers; I'd like to find one similar to fixitnow.com, which has helped me with several appliance repairs. Sadly, they don't do tools.

Provide engine brand, model, spec and production date and someone here might be able to help. There are to many recoil styles for anyone to go guessing without that engine info.
