I bought my sonlaw a srm 210 echo he does edging and hedge trimming with it works great. Just string on trimmer blowes off walkways there is better string for this I got roll forgot name its very strong kind square in stead round red with like silver on edges.

Damn, tough to make out exactly what gator rider was trying to say :). Anyway, yes...You did see a landscaper using his trimmer to do the edging. Maybe he had an edger attachment on it with a metal blade but more likely he just used the string trimmer to do the edging. It's fairly common practice with those pro guys - saves them time & they are good with the trimmers. You can certainly use your string trimmer to edge as well, but it takes some time to get used to it. My best advice is to start in areas that are less visible for the mistakes you will make, go slowly & always make sure the string is well above the grass you intend to edge before you rev the engine or the string will dig in & scalp the lawn. Oh, and be careful of the muffler on the trimmer or you can get burnt easily. Again, there is definitely a learning curve with using a string trimmer as an edger...

colonel428 is right about the practice. I do mine about once a month and that is not frequent enough to be really good at it. I still occasionally get a little bit off and the string walks the head into the lawn deep cutting a section I did not want to. In the end, it is easier and quicker than using my manual edger. I manual edge once or twice a year to keep it tight and clean though.

I use this technique to maintain the edge that I originally cut with an edger.

I'm with Bogey-

Cut it with a shovel in the spring and then mulch. Then each time I mow, I edge it with the trimmer to keep a perfect edge on the bed. The key for me is to cut a small trench with the shovel to clearly define the edge of the bed.
