John Deere STX46: engine issues

My JD STX46 has a Kohler 14 horse engine. I initially had problems getting it started this spring, but you 'guys' helped me out. The engine runs fine for the first 20-30 minutes. Then it starts to surge a bit, runs rough, then eventually dies. I cannot get it started. If I wait until the next day, it starts up and runs fine...for about 20-30 minutes. Tune up needed? Carb work? Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the help!

    replace the coil

It might be your coil that stops operating when it's hot. I'd
replace it. If not that, a valve may be sticking. A clogged
vent hole in the gas cap will cause those symptoms too by creating a vacuum in the tank, preventing fuel from flowing.
Check for that first by running it with the cap off.

Picked up a coil today and will attmept to replace it tonite! Any advice on the replacement...or pretty straight foward?

    Thanks.

I replaced the coil. Engine fired up...idled great. Ran is around a bit...no problems. Put a little more pressure on the engine (engaged the blades), ran nicely for a bit...then began to sputter..DANG! If I choke the thing, it runs...but as soon as I take the choke off...it sputters and eventually dies. Carb? Anything??

    Thanks

Adjust the carb hi speed to richen if it has an adjustment. Is air filter clean? Is there is a good fuel flow to the carb? What happened when ran with tank cap[ off/loose?

I ran with the cap off and the same results. Air filter is brand new. There appears to be good fuel flow. It seems to be an issue when the engine is stressed a bit.

Tried again this afternoon, engine starts...run for a bit..then begins to sputter...gas cap open...air filter off..new fuel filter. When I choke it, it runs.

    ??????????

IS your fuel filter a genuine Kohler filter. There have been SOME problems reported with Kohlers when a non OEM filter has been used. I don't know why.

I got it from a John Deere dealer.

"I got it from a John Deere dealer."
Which does NOTHING to answer my question!

If it's not the 25-050-21-S, than you have the wrong filter.

I would guess that your engine has one of the mechanical fuel pumps across the block from the carb, correct? If you have covered your bases- (dropped the carb bowl to ensure it doesn't have a bunch of yuk laying in the bottom and your problem doesn't go away when you loosen the cap)the pump is waving goodbuy. Used to get those failures a couple times of year.

Check your valve lash - it could be set too tightly. When the engine heats up, the valve clearances lessen which will cause a valve to not seat completely, which in turn causes a compression loss & the engine stalls. When the engine cools, the clearances are greater. You could also perform a compression test with the engine cold & hot. If compression is less (or ZERO!) when the engine is hot, the valves need adjusting.

I had the starter repaired but it will not turn the engine. Is the PTO engaged? I can turn the engine by hand and I have compression but the starter engages but still will not turn the engine. What are my options?

I have a jd stx46. My problem is I have voltage to switch but when I turn switch one notch I don`t have voltage to operate electric clutch and when I turn to start position I have voltage in the white wire to brake switch but I used jumper wires to bypass switch but I am not getting voltage to solenoid to make it crank. I am by passing seat switch at this time with jumper wire. Could it be the 5 prong switch. Iv`e checked wiring diagram and they seem to be right. Appreciate some help.

check your grounds engine ground strap and also if you have a 3 pin solenoid it may have to have a direct ground take a jumper ground one end then touch other end to base of solenoid and try to crank it

i have a jd stx46 it will crank but will not start I have put a new solenoid on a new carb on a new ignition module on checked flywheel for sheared jetway installed new sparkplug have brand new battery fully charged have tried starting with parking brake on and seat safety switch depressed even tried with safety switches bypassed yesterday I pulled the valve cover tirned the motor by hand observing valve operation removed spark plug got piston on compression stoke at top dead center did not measure valve lash but there was enough play to wiggle rocker arms have not done a compression check going to town to get a compression tester try again any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Lash on most CV singles are not adjustable as they have hydraulic lifters. Usually if you lost an exhaust seat you would see that the valve sets lower than the intake. You likely have a solenoid below the carburetor which activates when the ignition switch is turned on to let fuel up the pipe. You should hear or feel a click when the switch is cycled. In checking the flywheel key, the flywheel must be removed. Have you checked for spark? If all fails, you can unhook the small wire at the ignition module to temporarily bypass a failed component that may be shutting it down.

Likely valve train or worn cam causing valves to not close fully .

guess it’s time to crack her open thanks for your input too ssewalk1
