Pool Covers

I'm warning as many people as I can reach about this company I tried to order a solar pool cover from. Name is America's Best Pool Supply.

On October 4th I ordered a cover and paid for it via PayPal from my checking account. On October 11th after hearing nothing from them I checked the status of my order and it had not shipped at all! I emailed and asked about this and they said it was the manufacturers responsibility! This morning I emailed cancelling my order and was told they would charge me a 10% cancellation fee! For their placing a phone call? On merchandize that hasn't shipped? That is blatantly crooked in my opinion so I'm letting as many people as I can know how they do business so you can avoid this pitfall.

Anyone know a reliable company to get solar covers from?

Follow up here. Just heard they're refunding me all my money. Still not happy about their policy. They say the manufacturer was out of the material.

Recently I bought a Magni-Clear pool cover from www.backyardcity.com I think that they had it shipped direct from the factory but I got it in just a few days.
Mine is 14 mil and has a 6 year warranty.
They sent me a paper that is required if you need to have it replaced under the warranty so hang on to this paper.

Thanks gardenerwannabe, I'll look into that link. The company has now offered to send me a larger cover than what I paid for and I accepted their offer but I'll have to really look it over to make sure it's the same thing. My only complaint was that they had not sent me what I had ordered and paid for so I didn't think it was fair to turn down an offer from them to rectify this.
I'll keep your link though because I'll need to buy some more in the future.

Ok, I have what may be a silly question, that someone might be able to answer about Ordering pool Covers (I buy them to solar heat my Jacuzzi)

Each time I have got one, there is a large peice of white plastic that is folded up very neatly. (This white plastic is about the size of the pool cover, but folded up seperately from the pool cover, does anyone know what this plastic was for?

Um, just toss away the warranty on your pool cover. Just like I did on my attic fans.

My attic fans ain't in the attic, and I don't think your pool cover is on a pool...

    :)

Mine just arrived. It's sitting on the deck cause it's too darn cold to mess with it at the moment. I'll bring it inside in a while and check it out.

How do they know where my pool cover is

This one is suppose to be a ULTRA-Therm Solar Heating Blanket . All I see is a bubble wrap stitched together with black thread. It's 16 x 32 rolled up and packed in a grey plastic bag that says sun cover . Does this sound right to those of you who've seen this product before? I can't see why this is so expensive.

    gardenerwantabe,

*laughing* because when you send it back it will have lumps and bumps on it where it went over your greenhouse. Also the eyelets and bungee cords hanging off it will arouse their inquisitive minds.

Also I bet they read this forum.

These pool covers sound great as a PRIMARY covering for a greenhouse. Resist UV and something that has not been mentioned before but is important to us. I hope they are not degraded by chlorine. (thinking a pool cover should be unaffected by chlorine)

No Chlorine in my GH water Chris. We're on a well and the water for the GH isn't filtered or treated.

Not sure what you meant by "*laughing* because when you send it back it will have lumps and bumps on it where it went over your greenhouse. Also the eyelets and bungee cords hanging off it will arouse their inquisitive minds." Missed the humor there somehow.

I recently bought a pool cover and the bubble insulation from Charley's I plan on using the pool cover on the outside and the bubble insulation on the inside. The pool cover is much thicker and should be more durable but it has very small bubbles the stuff from Charley's has 1 inch bubbles a quarter inch thick so while it is too thin to withstand the wind outside it will be far more effective as insulating than the pool cover.

Remember that at least normal bubble wrap is polyethylene. It doesn't have UV coatings or IR coatings. UV resistance determines lifespan. IR absorption and reflectance determines how warm it will keep the GH (so long as you have even a moderate R-value, you'll be losing most of your heat through radiative heat loss unless you do something to stop it). Thus, normal bubble wrap isn't good for much.

You could coat it in shrink wrap. Shrink wrap is PVC, although it's darn thin -- I'm not sure, at those thicknesses, how much they'd help with IR (PVC a few mm thick is a good thermal IR absorber)

    mollyd,

As to chlorine, there are many threads on here discussing cleaning, mold, alge and moss. It would be nice if we could safely clean a covering with good old, tried and tested, bleach solution. Unfortunatly we cannot.

""Not sure what you meant by "*laughing* etc....""

Basically trying to say, forget any warrenty on your pool cover if you are going to cover a greenhouse with it. Same as saying don't bother taking your car back to the dealership when it has a transmission problem covered with sponsors logos and has big numbers painted on the doors.

Using pool covers over a greenhouse is a relativly new thing I think, and there has not been enough time yet for reports as to how long they last, or what the mode of failure is (apart from blowing off)

To answer your earlier question, " I can't see why this is so expensive." If the covering is UV stable AND it is unaffected by chlorine then that is the reason for the expense. Same as UV protected 6mil poly is about 4 times the price of "construction" poly.

Yea but it is also better insulation it will go on the inside. I put the pool cover on yesterday and Their is no way that it will blow off. I read where people can't keep the cover on so I fixed mine so I won;t have that problem.

My pool cover is going on the inside. Too much wind here to put it on the outside of the GH. It would get torn off fast no matter how firmly tied down.

    MollyD

Tied down it will tear but the way I installed mine it would remove the roof before it could tear the cover.
I plan on using the bubble insulation on the inside. At first I was going to use the roof vents for ventilation but after finding out that the vent openers were junk and the vent don't work very well anyway I plan on leaving the cover on and the roof vent will not be used. I will use a exhaust fan in the end to pull the heat out. If I wanted to remove panels in the daytime and replace them every night maybe natural ventilation would work but I have better things to do than baby sit this GH. The flowers and GH is my wifes hobby not mine. I'm going to fix this thing so the thermostats will automatically turn on the heat when it is too cold and open the inlet vents and turn on the exhaust fan when it gets too hot. I don't plan on spending a lot of time with this thing after I get it set up like i want it. It will be completely automated.
