Craftsman and Troy Built lawn products are mostly MTD so they may be the same

Geo and Cadillac are both owned by GM, so they must be the same.

I know they're not the same because the troybilts look completely different other than the fact that they are all rear tine tillers with briggs engines. The engine mounting direction is different, the tine type is not even close, the transmissions are completely different..

Both do have wheels and a handle though.. :-)

Where are the owners of the troybilt proline and crt? hope there are some of ya out there..

Troybuilt went Chapter 11 a few years ago and MTD bought them. Their lawn mowers, leaf vacuums, snow throwers and line trimmers are almost identical to Craftsman units. Lowes is the primary retail distribution for these 4 MTD/Troybuilt products.

Is a Geo the same as a Cadillac ? Spacemule, to funny, thought they stopped selling Geos in 1997. Imagine an Escalade 345 HP Vortec HO 6000 V8 in a Geo. Maybe that could have been COBO ordered. What a sleeper that would be

Anywya onto the topic at hand...the Craftsman tillers and Troy tillers are not the same

I have a Troy Pony...bought it new at Lowes several years ago...it runs and runs, never had a problem....grew up using Troy tillers on the farm in upstate NY and am pleased with my new one...yes I have a comparison between the old and new...my new one is just fine.

The stories about Troy's being no good anymore because MD is the parent company are just that...stories.

As for CRT, here is my philosphy/opinion....CRT tillers are GREAT for breaking new grounds, tough jobs etc, however once you establish your gardem, the FRT (forward rotating tined) tillers do the job for you.

Summary: seems to me you have been through severla Craftsman tillers (or whomever actually makes them, I think it AYP), no matter, the things keep falling apart on you. Looks like its time to change.

Look at the model# on your Craftsman. It should say xxx.xxxx

I bought a TB Tuffy this spring, and I have an MTD lawn tractor. The MTD is a major POS, the Troy Bilt, even being their small model, is solid.

Spacemule's analogy pretty much nails it, they are worlds apart. Look at a comparably priced MTD and you can see the difference. Thin guage sheet metal, flimsy tines. Then look at the TB. Everything is much heavier-duty. Heavy, cast drive housing, not sheet metal, thick tines.

The Tecumseh motor started on the first pull after assembly and continues to do so. The only gripe is that I ended up w/ the model w/ forward-rotating tines, so in hard soil it will lurch forward if you have the depth set too deep.

Sorry birdman, but MTD is not now and never has been a major source for sears L&G. For at least the last 20 years or so Our walk-behind lawnmowers and riding equipment and tillers have mostly been Roper/AYP and the two-stroke has mostly been Beard-poulan and Poulan. MTD has made both our logsplitters and chipper shredders for quite a while, but these are relatively small selling specialty items. MTD had also made tillers, mulching mowers, and snowthrowers for us too but agtain in smaller numbers. Some two stroke products of late looked just like ryobi but my two saws and 2 weedwackers were all 358 Poulans. FWIW, DAve. PS much of what says troybilt on it is now MTD stuff.

Thanks Techdave, I stand corrected,to funny but my source was a Sears salesman when I was looking at a Snowthrower. He seemed to know an awful lot about MTD and Troybuilt.

I had a Roper tractor abour 25 yrs ago, it lasted like 10yrs and I sold it, still worked great

Troy-Bilt also has an extensive dealer network, look for Cub Cadet or White, many of them also carry Troy-Bilt. I have a Troy-Bilt Pony and couldn't be happier. Not to mention, the parts are plentiful. I had to order oil seals, tine shaft and bearings, all came in within a week. Once you buy the Troy-Bilt you'll want to keep it. I use mine almost every week in my garden with the hiller furrower to suffocate weeds and make it look nice. My garden looks like it could be in one of those TB sales brochures! I like the Pony best though, small enough to get into tight spots, large enough to handle sod, clay, you name it.

Hi, I'm a new member. Have a 1984, 7HP Horse, with no spark. Have replaced the stater coil, condenser, points and spark plug. Still no spark! Need a wiring diagram for this hook up and some idea what might be wrong. This is a pull start system.

Okay, I know this is a very old thread but I stumbled on it and someone else will also. So here is my experience with Troy Bilt. They are not what it used to be! Ours was messed up and would jerk back so hard when starting that it broke my wife's wrist. We have this on record and are currently looking into hiring a lawyer since MTD didn't really seem to want to talk to us. The engine is made in China on all but the biggest now. I think it has a Honda engine. Another relative had the same jerking problem and had to have it fixed. Search online and see how they are holding up. Everything is cheaper now since these money grubbing corporations have sent everything overseas.
