John Deere 455

I know there are a lot of John Deere fans on this forum and am looking for input so I can make an informed decision. I am in the market for a mower. Went to a John Deere dealership today where I saw a 455 that's in EXCELLENT condition. It was obviously very well cared for. The original owner traded it in on a zero turn. The salesman thinks it's 11 years old with 400 hours on it. It's a 23 HP diesel with a hydrostatic transmission and a 60 inch deck. The asking price is $5800. I'd like to know how much it's worth. The salesman said that most people who spend that much money on a mower want a zero turn. Am just beginning my search and would like to know how much to offer for that mower.

Thanks for any help.

I would call it a fair deal - I would shoot for $5,300.00 It is a great machine. Has one of the best reputations of any garden tractor ever made.

Top of the line garden tactor with PS and traditional squarish tractor good looks. Price is probably in the ball park if only a few hundred high. The attachments can be incredibly expensive however. I remember seeing a hydraulic tiller for one of those for around $1.5K used! If you only need it for mowing that's something to think about.

    gjg,

What are your expectations as to what this tractor should/will do?

    Cheers

I'm not really sure, JDFANATIC. I'm trying to figure out what I need. We have a farm. We lease most of it out but there are areas I would like to keep mowed, namely the yard (the house is vacant now but will not always be), around the barns, around the ponds, along the fence lines, and some smaller field. The terrain is not that bad but it's not all yard like. The JD dealer thought this mower would do the trick. I also want to be able to pull a sprayer. I'm just beginning the search. I have wondered about a small tractor with a finishing mower. It was also suggested that I look into an ATV with a trailmower. I'm new to all this and am still trying to sort it out. I saw the 455 at the dealership and was so impressed with the condition that I wanted to find out what it's worth. Thanks for any help.

I would probably pay $5K+ for a 400 hour 455 . . . . looked all over for exactly that when I was in the market but there were no decent ones to be had in that price range - My dealer said few owners ever sell them . . . . they just hand them down through the family

I bought me a similar Kubota diesel with not quite as many features as the 455, but I got it used with only 35 hours on if for $4500 . . . . plus another $500 for the hydraulic 3 point hitch

A 'similar' JD diesel brand new will cost you about double the $5800, so paying that for a nice, low hours machine isn't a bad deal at all, IMO

    gig,

It sounds like the 455 would be a good choice for your tasks. I used the baby brother 425 for over ten years with nothing but good luck. The only nit-pick I can throw at it is that it ran out of traction before power (really a complement). And I used to keep double rear weights on the rear wheels, single on the front, and filled the 3PH rear weight bar with 45# suitcase weights to help get the power to the ground. This tractor with a 54" or bigger MMM would be a grass eater. It has differential lock for added traction and a deluxe riding seat. If the condition is a good as you describe, I would snatch it up.

    Cheers

For a farm application I would go for a compact tractor that is bigger than the 455. A front loader is very useful on a large property. A ford 1210 series or kubota or allis chalmers would be far ahead of the 455. There are also plenty of JD compact tractors if you prefer that brand... There were some large large frame simplicity tractors that are also highly recomended... check out a 4040 or 4041 simplicity...

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm still doing research and mulling it over and hopefully will come up with something satisfactory before the weeds completely take over!

i have a john deere 415. it's about the same as a 455. it has the yanmar diesel with 155 hrs. this is a 9 1/2 out of ten. i bought it from a local jd. dealer with 1hr. on the tractor. dealer said it was a leftover from the factory a is for export use. was wondering what it is worth.

I currently own a 455 John Deere @7 HP with a 60" cut. I have about 750 hours on it and spend over 1400 dollars at John Deere to fix it. I still dont seem to have any power. All 3 cylinder are hot but no one knows whats wrong. I am going to buy a new tractor and sell this one. I will get what I can for it. I am not looking at John Deere this time because of looking at internet prices I can buy another tractor same engine for several thousands less.

There are lots of people out there that call themselves mechanics, but, most are average at best. I'm sure if you talked to the right people, you could find a guy who could get that thing running as it should. Mechanical aptitude can't be taught. Make no mistake, the 455 is in the running with the 318 for all time best JD riders.I believe the 318 has the edge though.

I bought a 455 with 1600 hours a year ago, and this thing is a BEAST! It starts up when you think of turning the key, and I have a 2 1/2 acre field that was formerly brush, briers and saplings. About 3-4 feet tall, and dense. I thought I would have to bush hog first, then use the JD to keep it cut, but thought I would try it never the less. It cut all that crap and then some. If it could knock it down, it would cut it. It obliterated pine saplings that were two feet tall. Ok, I have to admit, I had to put new blades on after mowing this mess twice, but now it looks like a yard. I LOVE this machine, and it is my weekly therapy to go out and mow. I do my elderly neighbor's field for free, just to spend a little more time with my Deere!

I have a 455 for sale right now that has about 330 hours on it. Has 3 point hitch, front angle blade, box blade, and complete set of suitcase weights and rear wheel weights and chains. I would take $8000 for all of it. 785-542-3285 if interested.

I just found a JD 455 1100hrs with 60"deck, 3pt, rear PTO, and a barely used 54" power angle front blade for $5300. It seems like a good find in this area. I have been looking for 2 months and everything I've found is a pretty far drive and close to same money without the rear pto, 3pt and blade.. What does anyone think? Thanks

I have a John Deere 455 that has 575 hours, 60 inch mower deck with attachment to catch clippings and pick up leaves for sale in the Greensburg, PA area. What would be a good price to sell it?

Cathchar - is the mower still for sale? (sorry don't mean to hijack the thread).

    Sorry it is sold

    Thanks
