I bought a JD X540 on Friday and I am beginning to think that I made the wronge decision. Does anyone know what the JD return policy is?

If I wanted a Prestige as bad as you say you do, then I would make the hour and half drive to wherever, to procur it. I would then drive to my local Simp dealer with my new Prestige on my trailer and show the stupid jerk that he just lost a sale due to his arrogance in believing that he had me by the balls.

And no, I wouldn't tell him where I bought it because it isn't his right to know. All he needs to know is that he isn't the only game in the state.

As for service, that's something that I do myself because I don't trust the idiots working in the shops these days. Warranty is likely something you won't need anyway due to the quality of the Simplicity product generally but even if I had to inconvenienced by making that trip to the other dealer, it would be worth it just for the joy of seeing the look on the dealer's face that refused to get you the '07 model.

I had a JD dealer refuse to order what I wanted so I went to another dealer. They were not helpful so I ended up at a third dealer. You speak with your $$. That is how the bad dealers get weeded out. I think you should take the tractor back if you are not satisfied. JD gets a lot of sales based on their name as well as the product. They are betting that you will be impressed and keep the machine. You are not. They will resell it at a 20% cut and make nothing or lose a bit. Life will go on.

In the end you gotta do what you think is best. I guess I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around a Simplicity dealer telling you he won't get you what you want. That in and of itself would keep me with another brand. All you are doing with your behavior now is emboldening the terrorist er I mean dealer at Simplicity who you say thinks he has you by the balls.

Man this has been a good thread. Very entertaining. As to the dealer loosing anything by you returning the JD, they won't. JD itself will take care of that.

As to the Simplicity dealer not ordering what you want, sounds like from what some have said that the '06 may be better than the '07 anyway Electric deck lift is a gimmick to sell mowers to people who don't know any better. How often do you adjust your deck height anyway? So just take the JD back and get the '06 from the AH dealer. Or go to the nice dealer farther away and get the '07. No matter how nice he is, he can't refuse to sell you a mower just because you are in the other dealer's territory. As for service, I can't really understand people's obsession with the quality of the dealer for service. Unless you are a commercial mower who needs to have service and parts available as quickly as possible to avoid downtime and loss of money or unhappy customers, why do you need to worry about service? Service is changing your oil once or twice a season, changing the plug, maybe changing hydro oil, occasional greasing etc. All stuff you can easily do yourself. As long as a mower is not abused or used commercially it really won't need much "service" at all if it was even halfway decent to start with. As an example, my 14 year old Ariens has had yearly oil changes, plug changed maybe 4 times, a few belts as they wore out, a bearing on a deck pulley and one idler pully. That's it in 14 HARD years of use and several years of being parked under a maple tree when not in use.

You don't like the JD. You will never feel good about it. Take it back and get your money back. Take the wad of cash to the AH dealer and tell him you are ready to order and if he will order for you fine, if not you are going to another dealer. I'll bet he will order it. If not, walk out. Or just get the maybe superior '06 from him to start with. I remember when I was shopping for my mower 14 years ago, I had a Simplicity dealer tell me something that made a lot of sense. He said not to worry about the tractor part of the mower too much. Worry about the deck. That is the important part. I would have likely had a better quality of cut from the Simplicity but I went with the Ariens because of price. No regrets really considering how durable it has been.

It's a big purchase...get what you want. JD can afford to take your mower back!!

Then go home and mow and be happy.

    kandykane,
You have been a trooper through this whole thread. You never lost you cool, even if some people tempted you. If all is true, take back the JD and get what you really want. It may hurt the dealer a little bit, but I bet you are not the first to take a tractor back. I understand that many of you don't like to see dealers get hurt or take a loss, becuase it seems good dealers are disapearing, but I bet in a situation like this, JD takes care of the loss, or the can resell and still make profit.
Good luck with what ever you decide,
    Stolly
PS. I have 3 wheel horses and a brand new JD X320.

I never had a tractor that effected me emotionally to the point I had to sell it - Its not like your first girlfriend for goodness sakes....anyway return the green machine, and with the extra cash, go talk to a professional so the next time you dont get so emotional to something so lifeless as a piece of metal with wheels and a motor.

    Happy tractoring either way !!

Sounds like his wife divorced him for spending the vacation money on a new Cub.

I think the first mastake you made "Asking these guys" You do what is right for you so easy to tell other people how to handle their problems but it is funny when the "shoe is on their foot" how different the answers become.

Take it back, mow the grass and call Dr. Phil.

So I see you still haven't taken the Deere back . . . Hmmmmmm

hmmm...wonder if I could order a Brinly plow and box blade from Home Depot, use it for 29 days and return it for my money back. Hey, as many box stores as around I could've done that all summer long with a new mower every 30 days and not been out a dime.

Sadly, I believe there are people that do just that soccerdad. Have you seen all the "lightly used" return equipment in front of the Big Boxes?

Best buy had to change their return policy because folks would buy big screen TV's to watch a Game-or-football party then return it.

    >> Best buy had to change their return policy because folks would buy big screen TV's to watch a Game-or-football party then return it.

And I tell you, having worked in retail, this happens a LOT.

Honestly I think he is a perfect customer for Simplicity -
I think the Cub made him cry, the green made him regret, and I think the simplicity will make him? happy? i dunno
stay tuned....for next weeks show on "emotional tractor baggage"

I talked to my JD dealer today about returning my mower. He was very understanding and said that he wants me to be happy no matter if I keep it or not. He is coming out tomorrow to pick it up and offered a full refund. I will let everyone know how I make out once I decide on a 06 or 07 Prestige. I just want to say that im glad there are folks out there willing to take the time to post there thoughts on here. I believe this will help others should they find therselves in my situation (well, maybe not exactly like mine but thinking of returning there tractor) in the future.

You are too nice... I'd be really pissed if I were an idiot like you kandykane.

I can see the title of the next thread.......

    How to return a Simplicity?

Maybe the next thread out there should be what forum should I go to for some honest help!
Thanks Wheel Horse of Course for all of you help!

From years of observations on this forum, I think if it was any other brand besides a Deere being returned this thread would have been much different. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

Ol' Rusty Jones says:" Quit crying! Sell the tractor for whatever bargain price you can sell it for! Swallow yer pride! Look in the phone book for the numbers of local lawn maintenence people, give them a call, and hire them to mow yer grass! Will save a lot of palaver, from a person who has evidently been living with a silver spoon in his mouth fer many years, and has no idea of fair business practices, nor any other ways to work with people! OOOPPS! Did i say work?

Someone should warn the Simplicity dealer that he is coming! Maybe send them some lube.

IS the name kandykane from that movie about that trucker to goes around killing people? Actor paul walker was in it? Anyway, Thanks for the updates on your tractor return and continue to ignore the rude comments. I am looking at simplicity and am interested to hear what you think.

It has been an interesting thread to follow and I have contributed my share of responses, so my next statement may sound a little bit hollow. But, in the grand scheme of our lives, does anyone on this forum really give two hoots whether kandykane keeps his tractor or not? To be honest it was a dumb question to come here and ask when he could have spent less time looking at John Deere's website or just calling the dealer. Kandykane was just looking for absolution and when he didn't find it, his feelings got hurt. To those of you who think that us John Deere's owners are responding the way we are because we own John Deere's that is true to the extent that most of us probably gravitate toward John Deere threads. Makes sense wouldn't it? I don't usually spend alot of time reading Simplicity threads, not because I have anything against Simplicity but because I don't own one. I am 100% certain that if Kandykane pulled these same shenanigans with a Simplicity, the Simplicity crowd would have let him have it and you probably wouldn't have heard much from the John Deere crowd. My own personal bias is that his excuses for wanting to return the tractor were about as lame as they get, and I think what he is doing is poor form, which is why I commented. But, at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what I think. His life won't be changed one iota by what I think. But, he started this thread, so he put it out there. Now I will climb down off of my soapbox, climb on my John Deere and cut my grass. Toodles

Come on guys... the man made an impluse-decision purchase, and has subsequently changed his mind... big deal... happens all the time.... Lucky for him, JD has a policy that helps out.... does it suck for the dealer?... sure... but the dealer makes more mark-up in the first place - just so they can offer such perks....

When I was shopping for my LT, I told my dealer that I want to waive my right for the 30 day policy, in exchange for an additional discount on price... he didn't go for it... but I got a good price anyway...

Looks like everyone on the forum has had his chance at taking a whack at kandykane. I think I'll pass. He/she has had enough.

Not at all I was more interested in the emotional attachment and sensitive feeling he had for his Cub long gone. It seemed dramatic, sensitive, careing, and possibly loving - all the qualities I dont possess...I think I can learn from him, along with watching Lifetime, and reading cosmo, to really get in touch with my sensitive side and emotions. I want to bond to my machines emotionally as well.
Personally the color red makes my panties bunch up, and reminds me of driving a chicks car with some chippendales picture (air scent)hanging from the rear view mirror.

The funny thing is he was fussy about how the power steering was setup on the X500 series - I wonder how fussy he will be when he finds out his deck drags? Bring out the tissues :) I got the dress already picked out

I bet there will be a new Simplicity owner signing in soon. The name won't be KandyKane, but something equally as feminine and he/she won't say a word about the JD he once owned for a few days : )

Now that was funny. I agree. Maybe the testosterone that flows through my veins is why I struggle reading the posts.

You guys are killing me. LOL. I always wanted a nice tractor while I was growing up and finaly made the income for that dream to come true. Its not that im emotionaly attached to my mower. It was just a constant reminder of a bad period of my life. Kind of like getting a divorce and living in the house that you shared memories in. Yes you could live in that house forever, but things would always bring that point in time to memory when it would be in most cases best to be forgotten. Anyone who doesnt understand where im coming from may not have ever went through something like this. Thats perfectly fine with me. I may not of understood myself if it wasnt me wearing the shoe.

An entertaining thread fer sure , but being a Simplicity fan it got me curious about the Prestige and I've noticed a discrepancy on the Simplicity website regarding the Prestige stats . In the compare specifications between Legacy ,Prestige , and Conquest the Prestige lists a 25 horse Kohler Courage while listing it as a 27 horse Courage in the list by model specs . Now I know two lousy horsepower ain't didley squat and is probably a misprint, but the bigger question is why is the bottom of the line Kohler Courage even an engine choice in a 7K machine ? Isn't that the equivalent of putting a Briggs Intek into a Deere X500 ?

I'm totally satisfied with my Vanguard powered Broadmoor , but since Briggs took Simplicity over and banished the Vanguard from the Regent line they have made some questionable engine choices regarding engine/chassis/price compatability and this seems to be one of them , putting an as yet unproven engine in an expensive machine like the Prestige . Last year the Prestige had Kohler Commands across the product line . My advise to kandykane , get the Prestige if that's what you really want- with a proven Kohler Command !

I agree 100%. Both the 25/50 and the 27/54 have the Kohler Command engines in them. The product specs on there web site is incorrect as I verified with the dealer. The entry 25/44 Prestige is the only model that comes with the Courage. I seen a 07 27/54 and it did infact have the Kohler Command in it.

The dealer just stopped by to pick up the X540. While we where talking he said that this is the third mower this week being returned and not to be worried by returning it. He said that ever since they did the redesign that there has been some customers unhappy with the changes that they made. He asked if I was going to be purchasing a Prestige and asked for me to call him to let min know what I think of it over the Deere.

Man, I will have to agree with you on that one. I felt really bad keeping you up all these nights by making you click on this post! I had a feeling that you were rolling around in your bed with the thought that someone out there was thinking about returning a green and yellow machine.

He sounds like a super dealer. Besides taking back your mower, he offered no resistance, reinforced your decision with anecdotes of other returns, and completely absolved any guilt you may have had.

    Kandykane,

Can I start a new thread for you? The heading could be "whats Simplicitys return policy? Because I just found out my deck drags" :)~

    Hi Kandykane
If you don't like it now chanches are that your going to like it less the longer you own it. If Deere has a 30 day return policy I would take it back real soon. Your dealer will be able to sell it and still make money on it. The mowing season is just begining. I hate to do that kind of business also but when you spend that much money you have to be happy with your purchace. Good luck to you !! Let us know how you make out. Pap

Well, I was always taught not to critisize someone until you walked a mile in their shoes.

There are two reasons for this. First, once you get to be a mile away from them you can say anything you want without getting hit upside the head, and second, you've got their shoes!

You should really research the return policy before you make a purchase. And, they aren't exactly hiding theirs.

A most entertaining thread. Some parts of it sort of reminded me of 2 old tomcats (literally, felines) that resided in 2 different houses across the street from the house I had at that time. Both yards were fenced. I would sometimes observe these toms glaring and spitting/hissing/growling at each other through the fence for what seemed like hours at a time. I'm sure either cat could have scaled the fence and "lit into" the other cat if it truly wanted to. My next door neighbor used to laugh at the cats and say, "Yep, one of them is scared to death and the other one is glad of it." BTW, kandykane, early in this thread you cited the fact that Cub and Simplicity weren't averse to declaring the thickness of their respective frames "Cub has 9 gauge and Simplicity has 10 gauge." I hope you understand that 9 gauge is thicker than 10 gauge, but, thickness isn't all that counts. The alloy and extent of heat treatment, and bracing all play a part in the ultimate durability of anything.

Post comments to a month old thread or a year old thread, if you want but at the very least, make those comments original and informative or even about a new slant on the old topic.

Telling someone the exact same thing that they were told ten efffing times previous is just a waste of time and totally pointless.
