Starting an Echo Chainsaw

Just bought a brand new Echo CS-400 chainsaw to replace my

aging Poulan.

I have started it only two times.

But ... I have restarted it dozens of times!

Flip the switch to ON, pump the little fuel thing,

Hold down the lever and pull up on the trigger, and

it will start. But it won't run convincingly. Give it

some gas ... and it dies. Repeat as needed.

(Notice: no cutting has been or is being done yet.)

Is it because the saw is new? Maybe my mixture has too

much 2-cycle oil (40:1 vs 50:1)?

Actual cutting up of a small branch was slow and painful

due to the saw dying repeatedly (2" to 3" limb).

This is a real downer.

Maybe it's going back in favor of the Stihl??

Most modern 2 cycle engines need a couple minutes of warm up time before they accelerate smoothly.

Your oil ratio (ie 40:1) isn't causing this issue.

Make sure you're following the exactly procedure in the manual and make sure your fuel is fresh.

If it still has problems take it back to the dealer. That's what the warranty is for.

Not familar with that saw, but usually starting procedures are the same. I agree any saw need to be warmed up. you do this by choking it to get it to start. quickly pull the choke back to half and pull the trigger to a fast idle. after about 15 seconds take the choke off and do couple of throttle excerises. It should excelerate up and down smoothly.

Outside chance there was factory assemble problem or part failure?? Verify the choke is working properly or the air intake is'nt restricted. Other than remove the air filter cover and looking down the carb. venturi for any obstructs and verifing the choke is working properly. If that's fine TAKE IT BACK to the dealer. He will either fix it, show you what your doing wrong, or give you another saw if he runs upright trustworthy dealership.

Lots of saws are set to lean thanks to the EPA, your idle mixture needs to be adjusted a little richer and most likely the high speed also. If your not comfortable doing that take it back to the dealer and some of them might not get it right. If you didn't get it from a dealer just find a good small engine repair shop. It's good not to cut with it untill you get it adjusted as it could burn up if to lean. Steve
