I have a scotts model 46580x8a mower with a bad transmission. Will the 20 hp intek briggs and stratton engine fit on my 116 john deere. Thanks

Probably. A comparison of engine model and codes would be helpful. Things such as exhaust, charging system types are typical obstacles for similar engines.

I'm certainly not an expert on this, but won't you have exhaust & throttle cable routing issues from the old opposed 42A707 to the new 406777?

Alternators are interchangeable, so you wouldn't have to do any electrical surgery.
