MTD Belt problems

Hope someone can help, I've replaced my Transaxle on my Montgomery Ward mower Part # 618-0073 for a 618-0163b, and it fits perfectly, the only problem is the drive belt keeps coming off. I've noticed a difference in height between the transaxle pully and the variable speed pully (The spring loaded one) Should these be the same height, and have I done something wrong in the installation. It's also a new belt.

Do you have the belts routed properly? The belt from variator to Rear axle goes on top; the variator to engine goes below. Are you using OEM belts? The MTD variator design is pretty sensitive to aftermarket belts. Clutching and launches are affected.

Lastly, you mention a spring loaded belt. The only spring loaded one I'm aware of is the idler between the variator and the rear axle. It keeps that belt constantly tensioned. The other idler between variator and engine functions as a clutch and is controlled by footpedal.

It would be nice to have equipment model #s. Did you put the bolts in the front bracket as well? They can roll the belt off if only the 4 rear bolts are installed.
