I have the bar screen and I use it very little. For wet material I usually just remove the screen altogether, or spread the wet material out to dry. My most-used screen is the ¼" screen that you have. My second-most-used screen is the ½" screen. I may have used my ¾" screen once or twice, so I wouldn't recommend it either. When stuff starts to clog my ¼" screen, I switch to my ½" screen. If it starts to clog, I go to my 1-inch screen. For an occasional clog, I just toss in a little chunk of wood and it will make a lot of noise bouncing around in there, but will clear the screen. Hope that helps.

I use the 1 inch screen most often and the half inch one next. Most of my material is large.

I seldom use my 1/4 inch screen because it plugs too easily unless the material is really dry. However, if the material is dry, results from the 1/4 inch screen are excellent.

I know this thread is REALLY old, but I just thought I would add to it, as there is very little information about this on the internet and I know I find it all helpful. I've had my Mighty Mac 12 for about year and a half. Until now I only had the 1 inch screen (standard size that comes with the unit). I always found the output from it to be as fine as I would ever want, so I was really happy with it. Recently however I have been interested in running compost through it. This does not work- it clogs right up. I tried running it without any screen. This didn't work to well either as everything just kind of blasted out of it and flew everywhere. I decided a larger screen might be the trick. There are only 2 screens with larger openings then the 1 inch- the one with oblong openings and the one with the welded bars. Both are pretty expensive, but the welded bar one costs more. Also, I felt like it was so open it wouldn't be much different from running without a screen. So I went the oblong cut screen. It works really well with my compost. The only problem I have is if I have a mixture with a damp clay-rich soil mixed in it This will still clump up pretty badly and clog the screen. It is still much easier to clean out then the 1 inch screen. I really wish I could have also tried the welded bar one, but with shipping, these cost almost two hundred dollars a piece They really are over priced. If they were more affordable, I would love to have an entire set of all six! (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, oblong, and welded bar)

Wilfred , we don,t have a clue of what a mighty mac is , certainly do not have one in my toolshed ? Then after 12 yrs they likely quit making a mighty mac lol.

ssewalk1: I'm surprised that you have forgotten, but the McKissic 12PT10 brush chipper was the most commonly approved chipper on this forum for many years and maineman & dmullen above, and others including me have commented on them over the years. They are still sold today HERE.
