Murray riding mower - engine broke

My lawn mower engine "blew up", I'm looking for advice/information; literally, I've got separated parts to identify.

The Briggs & Stratton 12.5 horsepower engine broke a connecting rod (I think). The mower is about 10 years old, regularly maintained; parts fail, stuff happens, life goes on!

I've checked with two sources on a replacement motor, and been told that I need a 13.5 horsepower replacement engine. Why do I need a bigger motor?

And, will a 13.5 hp engine fit the mounts of my motor? I 'll get the Murray numbers if you need them.

The model numbers for the B&S motor are:

Type 1113-E

Code 990824Z0

An engine swap, I can do, if the engine fits. My "toy car" is a Triumph Spitfire. Smaller engines make me nervous, I don't know why - the Spitfire is a 75 hp 4 cylinder.

I would like to get the Murray mower back to operational, but, a $900+ price tag bugs me ( if I have the work done ).

Is the cast iron sleeve prone to failure, and is it replaceable?

The iron sleeve might be replaceable, but is it worth it? I wouldn't think so. It should hone up and last forever.

Sometimes older motors aren't made anymore and you are referred to the newer engine, such as the 13.5

The mounting surface of most of the larger Briggs are exactly the same, so a wide range of HP will have the same crankshaft length and bolt mounting pattern. The differences might be where the throttle cable attaches or the location of the carb.

Did you try Tulsa Engine warehouse for a short block? They are much cheaper and you can transfer your old stuff to the new shortblock. You might even find a used engine on ebay.

Most 28c.i. short blocks are no longer available and at current prices for new engines generally not worthwhile. I work for a distributor, we have engines available at very attractive prices. Contact your dealer.

IMO would give the rest of the LT a good look over before I would buy a dealer engine and ask myself is it really worth it? Basiclly you will have a 500 to 800 dallar engine in a 300 dollar LT. I would seriously consider upgrading and looking for a replacement engine on craigslist or flea markets for about 100 bucks if you got to get it going again. Now you have 100 bucks in a 300 dallar LT.

I'm not being a wa I have a 1000 dollar vangaurd in a 300 dallar LT4000.
