Yeah, I just got one and the model number doesn't even appear on Murray's website. In fact, the name Murray isn't even on the rider anywhere, but I know it's a Murray.

Since Murray went "DEFUNCT", and Brand B has taken over,
the parts look-up via computer (ARI) only goes back to

1996. Anything prior to that is found on old fiche cards.
      It's pretty aggravating because there are SO MANY Murray's
      out there older than 1996 models.

In the 90's, Murray was using what is called a "Julian date" coding system. That is, the first number is the the last digit of the year, e.g. for the year 1994 the first digit of the date code is a "4". The next 3 digits is the day of the year from 000 to 365 (or 366). In your case, this date code scheme doesn't appear to apply, so my response to you doesn't really help and is just useless trivia.

Here's my 2 cents:
T-man is correct with regard to digital info available for anything before 1996. I had good luck with my old Murray because there is a dealer here who also has a mower graveyard out back and has an extensive set of fiche for many brands including Murray. If you haven't already done so, you may want to see if there is someone like that in your neck of the USA. Based on my experience, these guys don't take out the quarter page ads in the yellow pages, but keep their name and business simple. If you haven't already, you may also want to try the website for jackssmallengines.com. Though they have the same parts look up as Baymee's link, they do have a fairly extensive Murray parts selection.

That would make my Murray to be built in '90. My friend bought it brand new and never, and I mean never, did a thing to it, except change engine oil. It's almost original. I have to change the transaxle pulley and grease it and I think it'll be good for my son for quite awhile.

We recieved a Murray 40" 14hp riding mower that we can't figure out what size belt it needs for the deck, is there any way we can figure this out? We thought we could measure it by the one that broke that was on it but that didn't work cause it was very loose. Is it supposed to be loose even when it is engaged? Thanks for any help!

To the OP: The Julian date code "2662" is read as calendar day 266 first, then year 1992, and that would mean the day of manufacture is September 22, 1992.

I was given a Murray riding mower and need to find out what year it is along with how many belts it has. It looks like it has 4 belts. The belts keep breaking. Can't find the date code. But I see MS185-42 and Model 960440008. Any help would be appreciated.
