Will this Compost Set-Up Work

Hi,

I am new to the composting forum. Did some reading about composting and set-up the least expensive way I could think of. I would appreciate some fine tuning and dos and don'ts. For example how much water to add and how often? How long before mixing it up? How would I add kitchen scraps like banana peels and watermelon rinds? Wow, I have too many questions. I will continue reading the forum threads for information. Thank you all.

How much water and how often? That depends on a lot of variables. In desert environments, water needs to be added fairly often, but in rainy areas, some people need to cover their compost to keep it from getting saturated. You want to add enough water so it's as damp as a wrung out sponge.

Some people like to turn their compost every day. Others once a week or once every other week. Some people don't turn at all and just get compost from the bottom since that's where it is the oldest.

How to add banana peels and water melon rinds? Hold the peel (or rind) in your right hand. Walk to the compost bin, hold your right hand over the bin, palm down and open your hand. The peel or rind will drop into the pile. I'm sure you could have figured that out on your own, so you must be asking something else. If you think they'll compost too slowly as is (they CAN take a while to compost) you can cut them into smaller pieces first. I usually toss them in whole and if they're still recognizable when I need compost, I fish them out and toss them back.

With your compost pile located in what looks to be a very sunny spot you will need to add water more often that if it were in full shade because the sun will cause evaporation. If possible find someplace with much less sun for this compost pile. Otherwise what you have will work.
When I add any kind of kitchen waste I have a stash of leaves that I can put on top of that waste.

A good setup. If you get that wire just right, a little wider at the bottom, you can slide it right up and off the pile and shovel the compost right back in. If you wrap the container with an old tarp or some kind of plastic you won't have to worry so much about it drying out in the sun.

    Thank you all,
great advice. I think I will put a tarp around this one. It is in a sunny open area where my vegetables will go next year. I am going to make another one in a more shady spot that I will probably not do much to except water. See what the difference will be. The new one will get the kitchen greens and rinds with cover. I have to find an cost effective way to grind up things now so they cook faster. You have all made composting much easier and have taken the many unknowns out of the equation. It is amazing to get something so good for so little cost and effort.
