Guys Ive read about the shredded gear here and seen some crazy answers. 1st the gear shredded because the door was not operating properly. Check the door..release the door from opener with pull release (red or Yellow Rope) open the door half way (waist high) and let go. If the door stays its balanced (not glued stuck by people putting axel grease in the tracks) Track does not ever need to be greased, grease the ball bearings on the rollers so they can roll..they were not meant to skid along a greased track. Back to the door if it wont stay halfway by itself and slams down you will be replacing a lot of gears...also check to see if there is any binding or catches in its movement up or down...the gear is Chamberlands/liftmaster(sears) fail safe so the motor wont get damaged if the door is too heavy or not operating smoothly...they can be 30 yrs old and wont ever break unless the door breaks them.

I see men buying them at sears all the time and just shake my head...They have the mentality that its 10 yrs old it just wore out...and Ill get 10 more years out of the new one...Wrong... sometimes they get lucky and pull a yr or 2 most of the time its 2 weeks till they shred that one.

Save money and check your door 1st, if it is operating right and not heavy then replace your gear.
