Rear Tine Tiller?

I'm in the market for a rear tine tiller. I've been searching on ebay + craigslist for about 3-4 months. I was hoping to find an old style troy build tiller but haven't had any luck. I've noticed that even when i found a descent used rear tine the asking price is to the point where you might as well go out and get a new one.

Anyways, pretty much what i have local is Sears & Lowes. It appears that almost all the tillers these days are made my MTD so no matter which brand you choose your looking at nearly the identical thing no matter if its a cub cadet, crafstman, Pollan, or Troy Built. So you might as well just look for the best price. Am i wrong?

What scares me is the reports (seem all the way back to 2005) of transmission problems. I will probably only use this tiller about 2 times a year. My plot is only 20 x 12.

Just seens like the sears is much more heavy duty and not a lot more money.

If you have a tiller around the house then it will probably see more use than 2x/year.

However, if you are only going to use it that infrequently then you might want to think about either renting one when you need it or hire someone to come in and till it. That removes the storage and maintenance issues which are ongoing.

I would lean towards the Husqvarna due to the Sears trans problems, but I am not sure who is making what for whom.

However for $600 to 700 I think I would just wait till a garden way Troy bilt appeared and refurbish it. It will likely last longer than the above and would have a better resale. I have looked at a few Troys and it is a tough and sturdy design. Better than what I see today.

I don't know about the using it more than 2x per year part. Don't get me wrong...id be happy if i did just can't see much else i would use it for. I had an old front tine tiller that me and my brother split the money for. It was to much of a hassle to be honest with you. Every time i needed it i needed to call him to get it..and sometimes it wasn't immediate that i get it. I don't have a truck and he does so there wasn't much else i could do. This last year something happened to the muffler where it rusted and then pieces of it when into the chamber. Well my brother always does everything at the last minute so he took the tiller to the repair person to late and i didn't have a tiller last spring. I did end up finding one guy around my area that would do it for $40-$50 and he did a pretty good job...but i don't want to be dependent on someone else. If its in the middle of the week i want to be able to till it on the weekend if i want. Renting isn't much of an option either because they still charge about $50 and then i have to borrow someones truck and have it back to the hardware store in 3 hours.

I decided to go with a rear tine because the front time used to beat me to death. It would be great though not having to have a tiller because of the maintenance and it taking up space (i have a relatively small house).
