Wood Chipper/Shredder

I would appreciate some advice. Occasionally I/neighbor(s) have the need of a chipper for disposing of small limbs/brush. I've seen an electric powered 3.5HP unit, Rand brand(?), for under $150. Can't find any info about that company, so....China. The size is good since no one has any storage space and if it does what the claim is, it would be handy to have one. I've put an Ad on Craig list and checked ebay/harbor freight, but no joy on $$. Anyone on this Rand unit? Thank you for any help. Merry Christmas.

Hey Dave,

I'm a firm believer in "You Get What You Pay For". Dunno about the electric chipper, but the price seems too low to be a quality machine. The one I found on ebay looks very cheap and it only takes 1.5 inch branches. It wouldn't chip the fat end of a pool cue.

If you have time and patience to comb Craigslist and are willing to buy used, a Troy Bilt Super Tomahawk would be just the ticket. A good one can be had for under 300 bucks. Looks like the TB ST would have about the same footprint. I had a ST and really liked it - plenty of power, fast chipping, easy to maintain. It also has a shredder for the smallest twigs and leaves that you'll have left after chipping the big stuff. Unfortunately, they aren't supported anymore and you'll need to be handy, but most wear parts can be found aftermarket.

A Mackissic is supposedly also a good chipper as Maineman will be along shortly to say, I'm sure. I just haven never owned one and can't vouch for them.

The one on ebay is the subject I posted about. I asked the seller where is was made and if it is UL Listed.....no response as yet. For the 'once in a blue moon' I need a chipper, but I'll prolly just rent one if Craigs doesn't pan-out. Thanks for your post.

FWIW....Info on the Rand chipper: Manf in China for a USA company. NOT UL Listed. A electrical machine of this power not being UL Listed can be a dangerous thing. Being made in China.....I pass

Considering how underwhelmed I've been with 6-10hp gas chippers on anything but small handfuls of twigs and leaves, I cannot imagine a 110v electric motor doing a darned thing powering a chipper.

I'd keep an eye out for gas chippers on CL/Freecycle. You'll probably be happier buying a decent one than a Chinese electric/plastic contraption.

Is that Craigslist? If so, I have a 'wanted' ad for a chipper....no leads yet. Don't know what 'freecycle' is?

I have an MTD 5 HP gas chipper/shredder and it works very well as long as I keep the knives sharp.I think I'd shy away from the electrics unless as you say it won't be needed often and don't expect a lot from it.
