JD x304 Choke Question.

This is my first post. I wanted to thank all of the regular posters as I have been reading prior messages to select a riding mower. I have lived in my present home for 13 years but have never mowed my lawn, (used a lawn service). Every year the fees go up and up and it seems the cut and quality of service goes down. (In my case, not a criticism of the trade, just impressions of my experience.)

I just had a John Deere x304 delivered this past Friday. I am very happy with it, I originally considered x300 but settled on the x304. After using it I have to say I really, really like the 4 wheel steering. I have 1.2 acres with many trees, bushes, stone walls, lawn decorations, etc. and the tighter cut radius seems very nice.

On to my question for those familiar with the x304, is the choke lever supposed to stay in place when you move the lever?

I have read the owners manual from cover to cover, (2x). All the owners manual says is to "move the lever to the choke position". It does not say to hold it in place or anything else for that matter. On my other powered devices the choke generally stays in place until you move it back. On my mower it moves freely but does not click or lock into place but springs back to the no choke position when it is released. Is that how it is supposed to be?

Please forgive me it this is a dumb question but this is my first JD and in fact the first time I have purchased a riding mower. I would really appreciate some info on the proper use of the choke lever.

(Before anyone tells me to call the dealer, they're closed today.)

Thank you, Joe
