Makeshift system using PVC and hoses?

I had an idea (whenever I say that my husband rolls his eyes)...but this one might work. I'm looking for advice on creating a kind of makeshift irrigation system for my home lot (1/3 acre). We just dropped a bundle on basic hardscape landscaping for new construction (patio, fence, plus a couple shade trees) and can't do a full irrigation system now, but the new plants and trees need regular water here in Chicago, and next spring we plan on planting perennials.

My idea is to bury PVC pipes around the yard and thread garden hose through them, then attach the hoses to multi-head sprinkler runs (the $19.95 Home Depot kind).

Because the new trees and next year's flowers will need so much watering I don't want to have to drag hoses all over the yard--I'd rather leave them out--but I also don't want them to be either tripped over or cut with the lawn mower. I have only two spigots coming out of the house, so I need several hose runs to cover all the planting areas; a couple of the planting areas are separated from the spigot area by a grassy walking path. (I'm not worried about watering the lawn except to keep it alive, so I don't need sprinkler heads in the lawn.)

Will this work? I would pull the hoses out of the PVC "tunnels" every fall and store them; same with the sprinkler heads.
