Garage door opener - Can only program one remote at a time

My father-in-law has a three year old Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener which had only one remote when he bought his home two months ago. The opener has a Smart Learn feature. I bought a new remote which I couldn't program until I reset all of the codes. I reprogrammed the new remote successfully, but the old remote wouldn't program. After erasing all of the codes again I successfully reprogrammed the old remote, but the new remote wouldn't program. Bottom line, I can only program one garage door remote and that's only after I erase all codes. Based on some of the other posts I've read, this problem may be in the logic board. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

You most likely purchased the wrong remote. There is no way to tell by looking but there are 2 technologies involved. Take the model number off the original remote or off the back of the motor unit to make sure you get the right one. It looks like 139.XXXXXSRTX.

The second remote works as long as it's the first one I program after I clear all of the codes. I can't even program the original remote if I make that the second remote I program after clearing the codes. The GDO just won't program two remotes no matter which one I program first.

sflacke, that is the problem. The receiver will accept and work with either technology but not both at the same time. One of the remotes is the rolling code technology and the other is the billion code technology. The problem you have is not uncommon.

    Don,
Thanks for your prompt response. What I will try to do is see if I can program the original remote two times without first clearing the codes. If this works, and it sounds like it should, then I will buy the exact remote required for this GDO. I'll let you know how it works.

My previous tenant lost one of the remotes and I need to get a new one. But according to the discussion here, I won't be able to reset two of them, an original and a new one, together. Am I just doomed to have only one remote unless I replace the entire device? I would appreciate your advice.

No just be sure to take the model number off the motor unit. It looks like 139.XXXXXSRTX. If the model number is still on the remote I would take that also. You will need to program the new remote when you get it. I would not buy off e-bay.

How do I reset the code on the opener and the transmitters? Can you give me step by ste instructions? I have a key pad with an enter button. I lost the manual to the opener. Thanks a ton. Barbara

I had the car control set to open a different opener. The opener failed and I replaced it. Do I need to clear the old code before reprogramming it? Thanks, again, Eddie

Had to buy a new remote and previous owner did not leave manual....how do I program a Craftsman # 139.18760??

    Thanks, Gail

    Hi Gail -

My 139.18874 opener has the same remote.

I found a manual on-line (aaaremotes.com) for a liftmaster 1300 that is virtually identical, and am using it to install my second-hand opener. Everything is bang-on so far, and I'm ready to programm the remote. Waiting for batteries to complete the setup.

Sears will provide manuals, quoted me $17 Cdn with 3 weeks delivery.
