Rain bird controller needs 9v rechargeable battery

I have a 13 year old Raid Bird ESP-6 sprinkler controller. It uses a 9 volt NiCad rechargeable battery. I can only find 9 volt NIMH batteries. Will it make a difference which type is use, as long as I stay with rechargeable rather than standard batteries? The manual says to use "NiCad", but I don't believe NIMH were very prevalent 13 years ago when the manual came out.
