Very good. You are doing exactly what everyone should do after acquiring a new machine (I hope you intend to read the entire Owners Manual). As to your "old Vanguard", Briggs and Stratton says to tighten the dipstick down after wiping, to check the oil. So you were doing that right as well.

I always did it the way you do, put dipstick all the way back in before reading level, until I actually read the Kohler factory manual for my 16hp K.Command engine. They are very clear that you do not screw the dipstick cap down, just let it sit on top to get the right reading. Obviously, this means that we have been running our engines a little low on oil in the past :) In practice, a little low doesn't do any harm, except that it reduces the amount of oil mass that assists in engine cooling, and it leaves a somewhat smaller safety cushion before you are too low. If you burn oil, then you are ar risk of letting it get below teh fill point before you add, since the fully inserted dipstick will read a lower level as still OK. The manual for my Ariens snow blower with B&S Snow King says the same thing about not screwing down.

Do the same thing you did to learn to check the oil on your new mower to figure out how to do it on the old one. Who'd a thought Manuals could be used for something beside packing material?

quick update: Bowing to Mownie, apparently, we may have been doing it right on old engines, but it's not right for the new ones that say do not screw down :)

AWWW! That's funny! I always read the Manuals! Great info for the extended life of a new product. Especially New Motors!!! I thought I read the Briggs Manuals! The first and last thing I do before mowing is check the oil. Such a simple thing to do. I even change the oil once if not twice a season.
