vintage custom root

So, if you were going to order roses from Vintage and get a custom root from them as a free bonus or a low cost rose ($19.95 v. $45), which would you order?

I've heard from paparoseman that Korbel Canyon Red is a dark red china that will do well up here and is available only as a custom root. (lust enters in).

There are so many gallicas that are not available usually. I haven't begun to learn much about hybrid perpetuals and there are so many that are not available very often. Hybrid chinas ... old hybrid teas ...

So, if you could, what would you order? I'm thinking...

Frances Grate Tea, Arcadia LA Tea, Maryville Tea, Huntington Pink Tea, Huntington Souvenir d'un Ami, are a few Teas that I'd love to have that aren't available much of anywhere else that I am aware.

Of course, I'll never do it. I just don't have room unless I take something out. (Besides, shipping from Vintage is a killer). Didn't stop me from looking and dreaming, though.

    Good question.

Anna Olivier (tea) - this one for some reason is very hard to find commercially. It is a glorious rose - the flowers are buff with a brick red reverse on the outer petals, except in certain types of weather, when they can be all pale yellow, or all pale pink. Exquisitely graceful, and disease free in my no spray garden. Blooms from March through Nov here.

Arcadia Louisiana Tea has some problems opening in my coastal climate. I would be cautious about that one, unless you get some warmer, dryer periods. Here, it only opens in the Fall.

I suggest that you go on their wait list for the rose, requesting that they notify you when the rose is available at their regular pricing. That's worked for me a (VERY) few times, altho the wait has usually been several years.

There are other choice roses, however, that they apparently NEVER propagate except by special order, if my interminably l-o-n-g waits are any indication. Given Vintage's custom order pricing structure/shipping costs/special fee for shipping to my state, there are certain rare roses they have that I shall never be able to afford. That's life . . .

If you are interested in (rare) gallicas, it doesn't hurt to ask if anyone is willing to unload suckers in your direction.

jaxondel, That's what makes this latest offer so intriguing - free custom root with the purchase of xxx roses or $19.95 for a lower number of purchases.

Thank you, mad gallica, I will remember that.

    Climbing Oklahoma
    Hermosa
    Anna Olivier
    Probably Excellenz von Schubert
and if I did some research I am sure many many more...

Cost of shipping to the east coast makes this prohibitive for me personally. If I lived somewhere were I was ok with shipping costs, I would spend days making and remaking lists.

It will be interesting to see others want lists...

Comtesse D'Osunna and Comtesse de Rocquigney.

I'm tempted, but I have purchased all the roses that I could fit into my garden.

    Mme. Legras de St. Germain
perhaps Conditorum or Comte Boula de Nanteuil as well (...$$$)

This is worse than being told you can have any new car you want. I have been remaking my list since the email came in yesterday. If you act before mother's day you can get two free custom roots, which you would think helps the decision, but just makes it worse. I'm down to seven choices. I was happier when I just had to wait for them to cycle around. I'm trying to decide which ones are least likely to cycle up.

And yes, I've already overspent my rose budget and yes, shipping to the east is expensive, but oh well, money is useless unless you spend it.

Emotion I've never seen it available or the Gallica Arlequin what a bright gem it is.

I want Micrugrosa Alba. I saw it blooming recently at the Vintage Garden. It is a huge magnificent tree of a rose, very interesting and beautiful.

Anna Oliver, among lots of others that I've wanted over the years. Many I've gotten before when they've offered them but my success rate with bands is limited.. For some reason I can root them myself with more of a success rate than I can grow up a band!
Truth be told, though, I can't find any of the ones they are offering now that I want. I've got all of the ones I want that they already have available.
So even though I'm VERY interested in getting some custom roots, they'd pretty much have to have an offer where I could get them all custom root!

Is anyone else confused about the 9 roses from available stock, since VG ships in units of four?

Catsrose, I think that's their way of encouraging additional roses being ordered-

for example, from there in Calif to me in Washington State,

    8 roses shipping is $30

    9 roses shipping is $38
    12 roses shipping is $38

    13 roses shipping is $44.50
    16 roses shipping is $44.50

    At 16 roses, that's less than $3/per.

16 is not an astronomical # for a year's worth of roses, but my problem with them sometimes is that they don't have rooted what I want, so I have to find it somewhere else. Which, of course, is good for all the other good rose vendors out there. Bad for me, because then I pay big shipping costs for the much smaller # that I order. Aggravating.

Harborrose you really need to look at Juno for one of your picks. A very healthy rose here and a heavenly scent. Sydonie is a very nice hp which has a great rebloom. Oh and while you can see it in a few weeks at my house Madame Zoetmann is a great white gallica.

Lance, I'm glad you mentioned Juno. I've been playing on the Vintage site all morning and keep putting it in and taking it out of my cart. Now I have to put it back in! (Once the web site starts working again, that is. It hangs up on me about every hour. GAH!) I'm looking at Sydonie as an alternate.

Of course, I have no where to put them, but why should that stop me?

Okay, Lance, I'm going to start collecting gallicas - can I have one of the suckers, pretty please?? or ... does it sucker? do some not?

Glad to hear about Juno and Sydonie. I've seen them in books only. I'll bet they smell heavenly!
