Swap snowblower motor?

I picked up a free snowblower today. Toro 824. It has a hole blown in the block. I am wondering how I can swap a new or rebuilt motor in this snowblower?

I really don't want to replace the block and deal with the rod that broke or the piston issue, valves and stuff. Does anybody know of a web site that can tell me what the shaft size is on this engine? I would rather put a B&S engine in this chassi anyway, but I need to find out the shaft size to match it up.

The Toro web site does not state what the shaft size is for the Tecumseh engine, all I have is the engine model # HM80-155291P.

Any help would be great, boy if only need to stick a $200 referb engine or a brand new snow king 5hp motor in this chassi that would be great.

I have a old 1 stage mtd, and I wouldn't mind putting some money into the chassi of this 2 stage toro to get a decent blower out of it and retire the 1 stage to someone else. It looks like eveything else on the 2 stager looks in working order, just the bad motor.

I think this is a 1993 year snowblower, cuz of the ser. #. That would be a 16 year old blower, kind of did its life, but could get a new heart....

It should be 1", remove the pulley to check it. It has to come off anyway. That is a very good machine and if in good shape worth re powering. Tecumseh engines are no longer being built so B&S would be the way to go. You may need to shim it, the crank center line on the new OHV engines are about 1/8" lower than the old L-heads.

The 38080 was a very capable thrower. It wouldn't throw snow as far as the throwers with the more square chutes, but was a hard one to clog. No shear pins cause of the drum auger. They used to have 5 HP (small and med frame)or a 7 HP on the same chassis, but the performance was on the 8. Does harbor freight offer a Chonda? Anyways, a fun project none the less. The serial of the thrower shows it to be a 1990. If the spring loaded scraper isn't worn far back, it has lots of usage left. I would think the engine to be a 1" shaft, but that is what a caliper / ruler is for. Maybe a shorty is available.

I will look into a B&S engine for this chassi, any iders for hp needed? 10hp? Not sure what the engines have today compared to 1990? I would think that the engines of today would be better torque/rpm's? I am wondering if a 5hp B&S would be ok to stick on this chassi?

No shear pins, is that what kills these motors, hitting rocks and bigger objects locks up the engine, breaks teh rod blows hole in block?

A 5 HP will work if that is what you've got. Expect the heavy snow to not go very far. The drum auger uses grade 5 bolts rather than shear bolts. Grab a frozen newspaper, and the engine will want to snub, then a smoking smell from the belt- but won't cause it to toss a rod necessarily. Tecumsehs are prone to tossing rods. Having enough oil in them is mandatory or they start to exhange metal in the journal and bye- buy.

Just to be smart, I looked at HF You can get a 6.5 HP Chonda for 129 or an 11 HP w/ 12v start for 299. Probably deal with the Air filter/ box issue. I have never bought these. Are they similar in quality and serviceability as what is on the new throwers? Would be neat to see someone try it out. You could be the test person and report back. . .
