Take a look at Dorothy Perkins and Hiawatha pictures for your pinks and for the red Excelsea and Turner's Crimson Rambler for the reds.

The reason the ones in the ditch are low growing is that they get bushhogged or weedet either by the county or by the landowner. That's the standard way of keeping the ditches functional for moving water away from the road.

Given a tree, all of these roses will climb and will be really beautiful. It may take them a year to get the roots (like next winter) to be big enough to start to climb, but you should have some vertical canes by fall and those will be beautiful next spring, loaded with blooms.

All of these, in good not great soil, have the potential to grow the size of washing machines in two years. They also climb really well on their own, but will benefit from a little help from you to get upright faster.

These were the exciting roses of the early 1900s. Thousands of rooted slips were sold to beautiful the countryside and people started taking them for granted. Which is a shame because they are great roses. Some have powdery mildew problems but bloom anyway; others have no fungal problems in our part of the rose world.

A friend and I dug up a couple of these roses and planted them in our yards. Both are doing well and disease free.
