WANTED: Info. on winter sowing please

I have never tried to winter sow before but am thinking it could be ideal for me considering that I have almost 200 kinds of seeds that need to be started.

From what I have read, it sounds like you just take something & cut the top off, throw the dirt in & plant your seeds. Then leave it unprotected outside until spring. Am I missing something or is that all there is to it?

I have read milk jugs & 2 liter bottles are good to use. So would a 1/2 gallon milk jug & 20 oz. coke bottles be ok too?

Is it to late to winter sow in zone 6 now?

I know I have lots of questions. Sorry about that but I would be grateful if anyone can answer any of them. TIA!

first, click on the FAQ and read, read, read...they provide such good info- lists of seeds, soil use, and containers..
I started w/s in 2001- it really works! It's so much fun too! My little city cottage garden is stuffed full, and I have given plants to just about everyone I know! :))
I now use Solo plastic cups and/or styrofoam cups (the ones that are recyclable)- I use a nut pick to punch holes and plastic wrap over the top held with ponytail rubber bands..

after you have checked out the FAQ, if you still have questions, just post here- the w/s forum folks are great/helpful/sincere/funny!

also, feel free to email me if you want-just put GW/seeds/something in the title so I know to open it...

I see you are in sw KY- I am in Louisville- zone 6 is great for w/s!

I agree with Linda that the FAQ are a great beginning. Also if you post on the discussion part of the forum you will get more responses to your questions.

This is the exchanges part of the winter sowing forum and many people do not check here regularly.
