You could use the Styrofoam backers that meats and veggies (some times) come in. Take the backer, any color but black or dark blue, cut it into lengths, point one (or both ends)to push in the dirt, Print the name of the plant onto / into the Styrofoam using a pen or really sharp pencil. I use a pen as the ink stays, and the point marks up the Styrofoam nicely. The markers do not last for ever, but they are easy to get hold of and Free with meat purchase. So let the backer do double duty.

The marker, even if it looses its color, will not loose the imprinted name in the Styrofoam. Also, the Styrofoam is recyclable.
