Pecans

I was wondering how pecans do in other areas of the country, or whatever. I live in San Antonio. My pecans leaf out so late in the spring. Our winters are fairly warm and by March, it is already getting pretty hot. Yet, the pecans do not leaf out until mid April. They are just leafing out now. My oaks all leafed out over a month ago.

My pecans are mature, 30 years old. All of the pecans are like this all over San Antonio.

Anyway, where we live the rest of the decidious trees leaf always leaf out mid March.

Pecans are at least a month later.

So, do pecans leaf out a month or so later than the rest of your trees in other parts the country? Do they leaf out in March anywhere?

Just curious.

The pecans are just now leafing out here, too, as usual. Pecans are known for being the very last trees to leaf out in spring, and, interestingly, they're one of the first to lose their leaves in the fall, making them bare longer than any other tree.
I guess it's good for a tree to be late to leaf out - it's supposed to get down into the low 40's here tonight, and I heard something about the upper or mid-30's in the next few days. I sure hope my tomatoes, zinnias, Mexican sunflowers, etc. don't get zapped!

Our transplanted 1-year old seedlings from oikos are budding and 1 has started unfurling its leaves.

Well, here is a report you can add to your data base.

Up here in Amarillo, my red oaks started leafing out this week, and my bur oaks probably will this week.

My pecans started leafing out today.

Our last average freeze date here is April 15, but, its been about 10 days since our last freeze.

Our average last freeze is Feb 14th. So far, it doesn't look like weather has any effect on when pecans leaf out.

We've already had our share of 95 degree weather etc.

Nothing like having full blazing sun and 95 degree heat.

All of my pecan trees are just now leafing out too. My water oaks leafed out a few weeks ago. Ash trees are also very slow to leaf out in the spring.

Pecans here are showing budswell, and some of the young seedlings are beginning to open buds & barely unfurl leaves. They're in synch, more or less, with most of the oaks here. Black walnuts are the last thing to leaf out here most springs - and often the first to lose all their leaves in the late summer/early fall.

Our Pecans started leafing out the buds on April 5th along with some other late leaf budders such as Witch-hazel, Lombardy Poplar, Quaking Aspen, cottonwood, Black Tupelo, Sumac, Red mulberry, American Sycamore, invasive Silk trees, and even later Natchez crepe myrtles (April 11th). One of the latest of all is Black walnuts, a few are starting to bud open but some still have not.

Actually, the very young trees have alrady leafed out here, but the big ones in orchards are just beginning. I've noticed that very young trees always leaf out sooner than their bigger counterparts - I guess that's because when the sap starts to rise in spring, the sap in the little ones doesn't have as far to travel?
