climbing austins

hi, i am in south ga. and want to plant some climbing austins. I have a new pergola that i want them to climb. It gets really hot here so I need something that can hold up under the heat. I need some suggestions. I have never grown a climbing rose so all help will be appreciated. lisa

You know I bought a bunch of Austins and never thought to look as to if they were climbers or not. Turns out only one ended up being upright, the rest are monsterous climbers. Do you have color preference? Teasing Georgia is a fabulous climber as are Heritage and The Generous Gardener. All of those do fabulous in the Texas heat and humidity which may not be as bad as yours but I grow them no spray so they should do fine there. TG is a creamy yellow, Heritage is a light pink and TGG is white.

Go to youtube and look up the ashdown videos on climbing roses. You will find them immensely helpful

Here is a link that might be useful: ashdown rose videos on youtube

You may also want to consider some Tea-Noisettes to cover your pergola:

    Reve d'Or
    Crepuscule
    Jaune Desprez

    Just a thought.

I planted Crown Princess and Gertrude last year. Both are about to bloom and are gaining in height...Crown didnt bloom first season but gertrude did. I love the colors..since this is my first try at them I don't know how this summer will turn out. Already had to fight the rose slugs...but just sprayed. Gertrude is beautiful but thorny as all get out! My austins look great right now..but I've also ordered Teasing Georgia and Iceburg from Austin..Evelyn too but I'm not sure if this one climbs..there may be 2 varieties of it...someone here will know. All of these are lovely....and seem quite hardy. I went to a site I think was justpictures...Google Roses and it should be there somewhere. The pics are astounding and you can see about every rose known to man!Good Luck and keep in touch...love to know how yours do!!

I have Crown Princess too. It is basically on it's second year. Was planted in November 2007 secondary to wonderful J&P shipping service. To my great surprise it survived, and even bloomed a little bit last summer. The color faded pretty fast, but the plant is too young to judge. It grew though good 7-8 feet tall. This year it looks glorious so far, and all covered with buds. I also had James Galway in my Colorado garden, and loved it! It is less mentioned Austin rose here.It was very hardy, grew huge around my garage door, and blooms were unusual and lovely. Good luck!
