How do root cuttings with hormone work?

My wife cut a chestnut or chinkapin oak sucker from an old stump today. We have some root hormone, Brand Bontone Rooting Powder with the active ingredient being Indole-3-butyric acid .10%. I get the idea that the hormone causes roots to grow in the area where the stem was dipped in it. My question is how do you actually do it and have the cutting live? I cut about 6 inches off one new growth branch, and it appears to be soft wood and new. At the end are about 4-5 small leaves. I dipped it in about an inch or two in the hormone powder and stuck in a pot with sand and potting soil. I then watered lightly. I soaked the entire actual original cutting in water all day. (it is about 16" in length with a few branches with 4-5 small leaves). Is that it? Magic, in a few weeks I have a tree growing? It seems like the cutting will die. I can't figure out how it can live without roots! Any help would be appreciated on tips, techniques, and how the heck these things can live just stuck in the ground with no roots!
