Help me build a garden!!! Please

Hello,

we live in Mid Coast Maine. We have been trying to garden for a few years. Our garden which the last family garden in for many years is very rocky. Not much but weeds grew. So this year we made raised garden beds and ordered some garden soil that was supposed to have sea emultion in it. I believe i could be dead dirt.LOL We planted our garden consiting mostly gourds and pumpkins and they havent grown much since planting at the end of May , even after fertilizing weekly and putting some composted manure on it. So now we are rethinking. We would like to build up are garden in the back starting this year. It has gone to weedy grass. Where should we start. I thought that maybe we should cover it with a black tarp, and start building up the soil. We live on a small hobby farm, We have mini donkey's, Goats, Chickens, and ducks. There waste has wood shavings and some hay. can we compost all of it right on the garden under tarps. HELP we dont know what to do. Any suggestion or book recommandations would help. Sorry this is so long. Thanks

Sounds frustrating! You came to the right place as there is so much here about improving your soil. Keep reading this forum.

Rather than black tarp I would get huge amounts of cardboard from the grocery store and you can build up on that and the cardboard will feed earthworms. Things won't compost well under tarps, the matter will need air and rain to compost, so don't cover it with plastic.

The animal droppings will compost and are great amendments to a compost pile. Adding Compost each year to your garden will help. My current garden started was solid clay and after five years of adding compost, leaves in the fall, manure, wood chips/ sticks from under my log piles (spring clean up), my soil is great. Its going to take time (years) to get good soil but its worth it. Find what you have available cheap or free. Seaweed?. Then if you have room, start a compost pile (if you havent already) and-or several, make or buy some bins, maybe even a tumbler. I add my finished compost in the late winter and late fall, and manure in the early spring. The worms will do the rest. If you have no worms, buy some from a local bait store, they multiple quick.
Take a bite of everything the folks here have to offer, dont be afraid to try new things, if your unsure ask, just take time to smell the dirt.

Thank you all for the help and incouragement. it is very frustrating. I spoke with the place I bought the dead dirt from.LOL They said they were sorry and want us to be happy customers. They are delivering 5 yards of compost. So I have a garden that I have been mowing do i put down the cardbord then the compost and add fresh manure. We are not going to use this garden until next spring.I am afraid that if I dont cover it, the weeds will grow. Will the wood shavings that are pine, break down before next spring? Sorry this is long. Thank you

Google "lasagna garden" and/or "interbay mulch" and you'll get some ideas.

If you're getting 5 yards of GOOD compost you'll have a very good start. First cover with corrugated cardboard, soak well. Add compost. Top that with other organic materials. Usually you can get free fall leaves, grass clippings, etc. Add enough water to keep moist thru the pile. By next year you should be on your way to a good garden.

    Good luck,
    Karen

Since you said you built raised gardens, I suggest googling lasagna gardening. With the advice above and the lasagna gardening method, you might have problem solved. I would really like to try the lasagna method, but getting my husband to help me save the newspapers and grass clippings would be more difficult than the gardening. lol

So I decide to give my garden a drink of Donkey tea. I took some dried donkey poo and filled a 5 gallon bucket have way with poo and half with water. I filled it 3 times before emptying the poo droppings in my garden. I think it looks better already!
