hard to start

can any one help: i have craftsman riding mower automatic model no. is 917.270670 engine is 16 hp model no. is 310707 typ 0136-e1. this is whats going on started fine ran great now this just started when i started it up yesterday it would hardly turn i had to jump start itafter a few minutesit wold finally start. what i did changed starter battery and oil this did not fix the problem the starter cam from my other rider they take same starter battery has full charge

First thing to do on a Briggs OHV engine is to adjust the valves according to the PROPER procedure.
Valve lash affects the compression release.

Remove valve cover and check that all parts are undamaged and working properly IF so, set valve clearance and see what happens.
