You don't have anything in the photo that would give an indication of the size of the pod, but it looks a lot like a dried up ground cherry, Physalis pruinosa.

My guess is a type of groundcherry. There are different varieties, some with pale yellow flowers.

Chinese lantern?

I did some more searching (thanks, Weebay), and it is a ground cherry. Found all kinds of recipes that use it, too. Think I'll plant some in a container-it wasn't called invasive, just has a major spreading habit-not sure of the difference.
Gardenunusual-the chinese lanterns have a different husk. Now I need to find out if it can be WSed. Anyone ever tried it?

Yes, I wintersowed some this past year, Aunt Molly's, Giant Cape Gooseberry, and Pineapple. I had good germination, and they looked great, but died after I planted them out. It was at a community garden, so I can't be sure what happened exactly. I ended up buying some replacement plants at a nearby organic nursery.

If you have small children, they will looove them! I kept trying to save up enough to make some jam, but my daughter would scarf handfuls of them down at a time. I did finally make a small batch of jam at the end of the season, but haven't opened any of the jars yet, so can't say if I like it or not. The recipe didn't call for straining the seeds, but there are a LOT of them. It's probably comparable to the seeds in raspberry jam. If you strained the seeds out though, you'd need twice as many berries to have enough to make a batch of jam.

Anytime I can get my kids to eat fruits or vegetables without being asked, I am happy, so I'll be wintersowing them again this year.

Shirley, one ground cherry could easily have 10 or 12 seeds in it, so if you sow it whole, you may have to separate the seedlings pretty quickly after germinating. You could try breaking it open, and spreading the seeds apart when sowing to save yourself the trouble of transplanting later.
