will this work?

Hi everyone,

I'm still somewhat new to this, so please be patient with what may seem to be 'stupid' questions....okay?

As everyone does, I have issues. One is obviously my need for immediate gratification. Waiting for the compost to cook is killing me...

I'm building a raised flowerbed. It will be about 15" deep. There is gravel, concrete chips, and very rocky soil under it. I planned to put landscape cloth down before the new soil goes down, but my question is...

I have a small pile of startings for my compost bin. Geese litter mixed with hay, veggie clippings, potted plant clippings, every mornings coffee grounds, shredded paper, etc. Can I put all that in FIRST, before the soil? Then the soil and the plants? Will the nutrients move up through the soil as it all breaks down, or would I just be wasting good compost materials? Spread out it would probably only be about 4 inches deep.

This bed backs up to my deck, so I certainly don't want to draw flies, but I thought the soil on top would take care of it. My original thinking was that this was just another form of lasagna gardening. Then I thought more and decided I'd better ask.

The deepest plants I will be planting are crepe myrtle bushes, and maybe knock-out roses. Most everything else would be small annuals.

So, whatcha think?

I'd greatly appreciate any help!

Suzie
