Pro-Mix

Several people on this site have talked about using pro-mix for their wintersowing. Saturday I was at Menards and they had two different kinds. One was for outdoor planting and the other said for annuals and tomatoes. What kind do you use? Is it one of these or a potting soil?

    Hi Hibiscusfan,

I just ran outside to check my bags and it says promix bx general growing medium. I used it last year and loved it!

ProMix is my favorite growing medium - I just use the general mix. It never gets compacted or crusty, and it doesn't contain weeds or sticks or other debris. Good stuff, I've got to go get more.

There is not a store in our area within 50 miles that stocks Promix..I contacted their website and have rec'd no response. Maybe I'll try to see if they have an 800# tomorrow.

Pippi, I used Miracle Grow Moisture control Potting Mix last year. Mind you, I used the moisture control because my jugs are under an overhang - the least obtrusive area and most protected from winds. I do have to water them, because they get hardly any rain. But it is possible to use different mixes, if you can't find the Promix. I think most important is to use something light, rather than regular garden soil, which is too clumpy.

I just checked my partial bale & the info for the US is 800-525-2553. It appears to be their US office in Doylestown PA (if the 800 number has changed, you can probably find a local (215 or 610 exchange most likely) number for Premier Hort Products. Hope this helps! There was a different 800 number for Canada, so if you're in the north e-mail me & I'll go look that one up for you

Finally, after sending a second email to Promix co. got a response. Closest distributor is in Baltimore area which could be 40 plus miles, but maybe I got the attention of the co. rep. who covers this area, DC, Va. and parts of NC. We'll see. Will keep you posted.

Pippi do you have an Ace hardware nearby? The local Ace hardware special ordered a bale for me and it cost $31.49 for a 3.8 cubic foot bale. It is the general purpose Pro-mix. It's not exactly cheap, but maybe a little cheaper than buying a quality mix in bags.

I just picked it up last night and was shocked when he wheeled it out in a shopping cart and said the bale weighed 76 pounds!

Pippi, I've seen (and bought) ProMix at Ace and TrueValue stores in NoVA. The distributor may be in Baltimore, but there are retailers closer. In MD, you might try Behnke's, also.

You might also ask (exhort) your nearby store to carry it.

I also have a hard time finding it, and from all reports on this forum, it is the best.

In recent years, my local garden box stores only carry Miracle Gro which I refuse to purchase any MG product on general principle, besides its reputation for inferior quality.

I haven't had any success in getting them to carry Pro-mix, yet, but am still trying.

If enough people ask, they may accede.
